Aurum Cantus AST2560 Areo Striction Tweeter measurements, projects, etc.?

I'm not getting any feedback on my 64-10 Raal thread so here's another one that caught my interest. I've searched and found some older threads at PE but I'd like to get some input from the experts here.

Measurements, crossover ability (how low with low distortion) and subjective impressions would be great!

    Thanks!

    Jim

(sigh) I misspelled Aero in the subject line and I can't correct it. Sorry!

Looks like a variation on Heil air motion transformer- that big bobble in the response in the 5-7kHz area is kind of weird, hard to qualify without any off axis data. Since the vendor doesn't do off axis, one can only speculate- distortion numbers look OK, but hard to quality, becuase like so many people they post linear instead of log, which compresses the bottom of the scale. Makes mediocre look OK.

You thinking about doing something with this?

      Hi Jon,

      Thank's for replying.

I keep telling Curt that each project is the last one. I'm 68 so time is catching up with me. He laughs and tells me every project has been my last one. This still in the "I'm thinking about it" stage.

So, to answer your question, this is a tweeter that is a possibility for the next project. We need something that will compete with the best, cross in the mid 2K region and sounds like a ribbon. 8O Yep, thats what I want. I can't afford the big Raal's so the search has expanded to AMT tweeters. The Mundorf AMT is also on my short list. I wish I could find an affordable low distortion ribbon capable of mid 2K crossover but I haven't found it yet.

The reason for my post was, when this driver 1st came out a few years ago, there was a lot of interest and testing. Everything looks very good but I wanted to see if anything had popped up in real world use that would be a show stopper. Off axis horizontal and vertical seem to be as good as or better than most domes and better vertical than most ribbons.

Here's distortion test at 90 db so it should be close to 2.8 volts.

Solid low distortion performance above 2K.

I'm looking for more to see if anything has popped up.

This plot looks pretty solid from 2K and up, though the 5 dB/div and small division markers makes it look real flat at first glance. What kind of slope is one question.. These would probably work nicely in an MTM with a 3rd order slope. I've got some Motus woofers that might work well with these.

Often there's just no substitute for listening to it... Though that assumes doing the design and voicing homework already!

Maybe the Viawave RT850 ribbon could be an alternative? Says minimum 3k in the specs but looking at the measurements it seems to be able to go lower than that.

            Hi Jonasz,

Yep Viawaves are also under consideration. We need to do testing on the mid before any decisions are made so it'll be a while.

            Thanks for the suggestion!

I've heard comments the Transducer Lab tweeter is as near a RAAL as you can get in a dome. I have some in a design, not yet operational, but I did notice something interesting when taking measurements. Usually with an MLS signal you can hear the natural issues of a driver. Tweeters especially are not pleasant. The TL was the first tweeter I ever heard that sounded simply like pink noise, nothing less, nothing more.

I've noticed similar effects even with sine chirps- test enough drivers and issues during sweeps become obvious. The TL Be part is very good in that regard, as is the SS 7140. In the "old days" I'd say I noticed that quality in the Millenium Excel.

In woofers, the AS190 stands out...
