    Firewire, HTPC's and STB's

The thought came to me earlier today....

I seem to remember hearing a while back that by law (in the US) STB's had to be available with firewire (and/or possibly DVI..?) to cable/satellite subsribers who asked for it, sometime this year, for the ability to record to DVHS decks. Is there any reason you couldn't connect that firewire output to your HTPC if you wanted? Does anyone actually have a STB with an active firewire port yet? Was this just a rumour I had heard? If you have an STB with an inactive firewire port could shady men in dark drenchcoats activate it for you?

Well I found out that the FCC has required as of April 1st of 2004 that cable companies must give an active firewire box to customers that requested one.

It looks like it may be possible to record HD or SD via firewire equipped STB's but it's a bit dodgy depending on the STB, your firewire card/mobo and your cable provider.

I sure would love to hear from anyone who has succesfully set this up...

      by mml7
      Hi,

I have a Samsung HDTV Set top box (SIR-T150) connected to my 1066 via a Coax cable and noticed the other day that the Samsung has two Audio output options: PCM and AC-3.

I have been using the the PCM option for a few months now without any problems. In this set up,...

      firewire?
      by spiffnme
I've noticed that all the new receivers coming out seem to have firewire connects for SACD and DVD-A, rather than the rats nest that is 6 separate analog cables.

Any chance later models of the 1066 or 1098 will incorporate a firewire input for multi-channel audio? And likewise that their...

      Firewire upgrade for 1098?
      by Tom Bombadil
As an owner of the 1098 and a Denon A11, I have been wondering whether Rotel could or would offer an upgrade to the 1098 to give Firewire (IEE1394) connectivity?

I am assuming that due to the modular nature of the 1098 that this should be easier to implement than pre-pro's of a closed...
