    Saving pictures problem

Not sure what is going on.
However, when I right click and save a photo from the Web, I can not open it later.
I get the message Windows can not open this file.
Windows needs to know how this file was created etc..
I never had this problem before.
    It just started recently.

    Any solutions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

What are you saving the pictures as? If you right-click one and view Properties, what is it? JPEG? GIF? BMP? PNG?

If you can't open a particular type (e.g. JPEG), can you open .GIF or .BMP?

Maybe one of your file associations got messed up. Did you install or uninstall anything recently, especially something that may attach itself to picture files, such as a graphics program or viewer?

Kevin,,When I check the properties it shows up as "file"
, so not sure what that means.

This all started when I installed Netscape and was using that instead of Explorer.
I noticed that any pictures I saved while in Netscape , can't be viewed.

I am back to using Explorer now as I fianally got it working, but same thing occurs when saving pictures. They are unviewable.

          Good find Gord!

Trev, you can also go and manually fix each file extension so it opens with the program you want it to. I do this as a matter of choice for various files.

          Select my "My computer"
In the Menu select "Tools" and then "Folder Options"
Select "File Type" tabs and let it scan for all the file extensions on your PC
Once done, scroll through and find the .jpg extension and select it. The window will change to a Opens with .

From there you can change it to open with whatever you would like. In the new window select "select a new program from list" There you can choose from all your installed programs...

          Have fun....

                Ok back up the truck...

I think we may be confusing the problem so let's start with ruling out a few things:

                1. Can you open any graphic files in any graphic viewer? Be it Paint, I.E., ImageViewer from quicktime.

                2. The files that you save. Can you outline the steps? What extension (or graphic type is i.e. trying to save these with? When the picture is saved, what is the extension on that picture file (*.gif, *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.bmp etc...). If you can't see the extension, windoze is hiding it. From explorer, click on tools\folder options or maybe view options...can't quite remember because I don't have a machine in front of me right now that has xp on it.

You'll want to unclick the option that says "hide file extension for known types"

Now if it doesn't have an extension...then you have discovered part of the problem...i.e. isn't saving the picture as a graphic file and the message from XP is correct...it doens't know what kind of file it is.

One of the things you could try is to take one of your internet pictures and rename the picture and give it an extension of .jpg and see what happens. (This is assuming you can open graphic files that aren't saved from the internet).

Try that and get back to us.

Worse comes to worse Trev, email me and I'll give you my number and talk you through it, though Bing may be a cheaper phone call. Course there's a pretty big game on tonight, so you may want to take me up on that option in the week. I'm at work right now and will be viewing the Matrix tonight (I figure the Riders have a better shot if I don't watch )
