    Windows 2000 Question.....

I have my hard drive partitioned with Partition Magic into C: and D: with D: having about 10GB free space.

Can I install Windows 2000 Pro on D: and leave Windows 98 on C: ?

Will I be able to see the C: drive when I boot up 2000 Pro so I can transfer files?

I think you can see where I'm going with this. I want to load it without having to copy all my files to disk.

That should work. If you leave both drives as FAT32 then both 98 & 2000 will be able to see both drives. If you make D NTFS then only 2000 will be able to see the D drive.

You'll get a boot menu that will let you choose between 98 and 2000 when you boot up.

Thanks Kevin, somehow I knew you'd know this.

How can I tell if I'm FAT32 now?

      actually I'm FAT41...oops..

Is there anything special I'm gonna have to do before installing 2000?

Well, Win98 only supports FAT and FAT32, and if your partition is bigger than 2 gigs or so it HAS to be FAT32. But if you want to reassure yourself just right-click on the drive in Explorer and select Properties; it'll tell you what format it is.

I'd recommend doing a backup first, just in case. But as long as you're installing 2000 on a separate drive or partition from 98 you should be golden.

Kevin's inputs are spot on. The only point I'd add is, providing you have a broadband connection, download the WIN2K service packs and burn em on CD so you have them handy to update your system right after you install; you'll also probably want to grab a copy of DirectX 8.1 off the web if you use media like DVD's or play any games. Then, you can march through all of this pretty quickly.

Is your WIN2K an upgrade version or full version?

If your computer can be configured to boot from the CD-ROM in the bios, you can install straight from the CD-ROM. Under XP that goes quicker than from an existing copy of 16 bit windows; I don't remember from my couple of WIN2K installs if it would be the case there. Then, after you've installed, change your boot configuration in the bios back to your "standard" settings. Older PC's may not have the ability to set these items, or boot from the CD-ROM.

            Regards,

            Jon

              Thanks Jon,

This will be the full version.

I'll be sure to download those files. Although I believe this one comes with SP3.... not sure, I'll double check.

I believe I can change my boot configuration in bios setup.
