I want to hook a PS3 up to my computer so i can get 5.1 to my computer speakers. I will be running HDMI for video directly to my television. I am not too familiar with the PS3 but i want to run an optical digital cable from the PS3 to the computer, and have 5.1 output via speaker outs. i am not too smart on the decoding aspect, if i need software, if a sound card can do it, etc. what would you guys recommend? thanks :T

The PS3 does output those sound formats, but only over HDMI. (every player does this--optical and coax do not have sufficient bandwith)

HD audio formats can only be transfered over HDMI. Also most sound cards do not accept multichannel input so it may be a problem. If you do optical out of your PS3 it would convert the HD stuff into high bitrate PCM.Comment
