nore more than 400 bucks. Or I can wait until next month... than 600 bucks, if I don't find something else that I need to spend money on to make my life seem substantial enough to keep going to work.

Have you considered something on the order of a Zoom H4 from Samsontech? I'd give a link but because of my number of posts, you'll have to google it. Might suggest Ebay for a good price for one. Think it would fit well into your budget

Might be out of your price range but you could look at Lynx Studio cards:

I've used Cool Edit Pro for years and years- it is now known as Adobe Audition. It goes for $350.

I was never as happy with Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge, but it's cheaper. The pro version is $300, and the watered-down version is $70. I used it back around version 5.0, and I found that I could get by with it, but couldn't get as much done as I could with CEP.

MAGIX Software - your ideal apps for producing, designing, archiving and presenting your videos, music, photos, graphics or websites.

What sort of features are you looking for? I've used Cool Edit Pro for multi-track recording, including playing back one track for the musician to play along with while recording them. There's some pitch correction, noise reduction, fairly good EQ and filters, and it has the ability to work at higher bit depth and sampling rates. This is especially important when doing post-processing.
