What Remote Control Should I get?

I'm using a Universal Remote Control MX-500 and wondering what your experiences are with the ones you use.

The MX-500 has learning capabilities and preprogramed codes, but I think I'm ready for something you configure with your PC.

I haven't found that all the codes offered are all the codes I need for the different components.

Also having 240V limits the IR sensor issue since I don't know of any that are offered for Europe. If anyone does I would like to know of it.

For me the key was getting something my wife could use without fouling up all my settings. I got the Logitech Harmony 680. My wife and I love it. Customer service is top notch - they'll program everything for you if you want.

Actually Its the "most" important thing in my home as well. I mean I know how to use all remotes, but to simplify it so my wife can use it and not blow up the system. Now thats important

Wow, thanks for that link, there are some really cool toys on there. I especially like the Philips ProntoPro NG TSU7000 and the Compaq iPAQ H3950 with the Universal Electronics Nevo. Cool stuff, great bookmark. Once I get some spare time and money I'll have to invest in one of those.

Wife-proof is really the key.

It sounds like you're familiar with the series, but in case you are not it is macro based. Your wife just his the "Listen to Music" button and it switches your receiver / pre-amp, selects whatever surround mode you want - the works. I have mine controlling my CD player, DVD player, sattelite TV, satellite radio, and DVR. You can get 'em new for around $100. I highly recommend checking them out.

Universal Remotes have a great line. All of the remotes are offered really cheaper on ebay. Sometimes more than 1/2 price and you get it in a couple of days

Good to know, thanks. It looks like you picked a good one from that website, very good ratings from a lot of people. I think Lexicon outsources their remotes to that same company, at least it looks exactly the same as that remote.

my complaint about the 500 is it is slow. I can change channels 10x faster with my cable remote than with the universal.

That is true. The MX-500 has great capability, but the bad part is how slow it repeats when pressing the same button, i.e. channel up/down.

I am considering the purchase for a Logitech 520 to keep out on the coffee table for the lady and friends, while I keep my MX-500 for my own use. As someone previously stated, the MX-500 is more of the perfect remote, but for the A/V type guy.

My parents are using the MX-700. It doesn't seem to have any problems, that I have encountered while staying at their house for a couple of days, with repeating. Though, my idea of slow when repeating might not be the same as other people's.
