onboard sound problem

hi folks

now using my computer as a htpc and have the abit av8 mobo using onboard sound via a optical cable to my home cinema processor, however the sound is only stereo, anyone know how i can get a dolby digital or dts 5.1 signal?

I am using the audio drivers that came with the mobo and have set the spdif output to digital only, when playing a dvd through windows media player there is a dolby digital icon on screen but only stereo going to the processor.

any ideas?


p.s i used an all in one codec which has a programme called ac3 filter (only discovered when messing with every setting i could find) but nothing seems to help.
