    X1 up and running

    My X1 came in yesterday.
Mounted it and the screen yesterday.
Got my room back together today ( ditched work early ) .
Had a wicked ground loop hum.Plugged the X1 into my Panamax Max 1000+ and then plugged it into the HDTV plug in in myMonster HTS5100 to get rid of it.
    Everything OK.
The little X1 exceeds my expectations by a mile!! Looks amazing, using the s-vid for now running off of my Sony DVPS7700.
Haven't seen any of the imfamous "rainbow effect" . Maybe I'm immune. Maybe some people were using lousy DVD players or low quality cables ???
Gotta go. Gotta watch more movies . I'll post a review later .

Oh yeah, by the way it's 92" diag 16x9 (80"Wx45"T view area.) It looks huge compared to the 50" Toshiba it replaced.

      Claude,

Your boss called and said something about your excuse for leaving work due to tunnel vision wasn't gonna fly...and that this behavior was "projecting" a poor work ethic. Shame on you!

But I spoke up in your defense and said you were a well "grounded" individual and was not suffering from any residual "rainbow effects"...

Looks great! Howse about some more pics....I am sure you can take some sick time off from work to do a thorough photo layout!

I'm very pleased with the X1.This little projo looks much better than I had expected.I can't stop watching movies, which kind of sucks because the weather has been fantastic and I feel guilty not being outside to enjoy it.Our summers are much to short in Alberta.

I blacked out the screen wall today using black automotive trunk liner cloth. This really seemed to help out contrast levels. The X1 is getting better looking all the time.
The system even sounds better with the 50" TV "box" out of the room.Imaging improved. The front speakers are 3 1/2' from the front wall and 22" from the side walls. The room is 12'wide by 25'long by 7'6" high. Main seating is at 14' from the screen.

I upgraded from my AR 25' S-video cable to a 30' custom made premium HDTV grade 18 gauge coax with crimped on 75 ohm RCA connectors.A friend that does installs made me the cables so they only cost me $70 Cdn.
The difference is quite noticable. More detail in the picture as well as more depth to colors (especially reds and greens).Even a slight increase in shadow detail.
I used the Infocus 7 pin s-video to component adapter to connect my X1 to a Sony DVPS7700 (interlaced, non progressive)DVD player.I checked my settings with the Avia disc and did not have to change any settings from how it was set with the s-vid.I enjoy this projector more and more the longer I own it.It looks amazing!!! The coax cable used for the component cable is manufactured by a company called Liberty. It's marked "LWC 18-CMR-50 HDTV SERIAL DIGITAL 18 AWG CMR" and can be purchased in different colors.

              I don't know. :?

The projected image looks a bit washed out from your pics. ops:

              Enjoy,

I tried out a ND2 filter today. The contrast level is noticably improved.I put in the Avia disc to recalibrate and only had to turn the brightness up from 55 to 56 contrast remained at 50.Detail in shadow areas is improved and blacks look black not dark grey.I could even notice texture in the black eye patch that #2 (Rob Lowe) wears in The Spy Who Shagged Me.I will be leaving the filter in place for movies but removing for TV viewing.Tonight it's LOTR Two Towers!!

                    Claude,

That was just a joke. The pics were obviously showing off the screen in your HT.

I have been using a Magenta filter with my G15 D-ILA FPTV and it definitely showed and improvement in blacks and contrast. 8)

AAAhhhh sarcasm eh Dean, now I get it !!!
I find the ND2 filter great for movies. But I remove it for watching regular TV and gaming.I hooked up my PC to the X1 couple of days ago and played some NFS 5 Porche Unleashed(and force feedback wheel).UNREAL!!Tough to beat gaming on a 7' Screen.

I should be getting a Draper Matte White 1.0 gain screen this week.

Draper had a run of screens that used incorrect adhesive to mount to the tensioner. So the screens started to separate from the tensioner.

Draper is replacing the screen for my freind under warranty and do not want the old one back.

So I get a freebie. I just gotta figure out how to mount it to my existing screen.

Got my Draper screen today. It was 100" diag 4:3.So I had to cut down the bottom and trim the matte black at the top(to 92" diag.,16:9).
I pulled back the black trunk liner cloth on the wall.
Then stretched and stapled the Draper over my DIY MDF screen.
                          Reattached the cloth and voila!!
The Draper with a gain of 1.0 is a little brighter than the Behr Ultra Pure White Flat paint.
                          Picture quality is excellent.
It works very nice with the ND2 filter in place on the X1.And the price was right "FREE".

Claude, you really need to get a progressive scan DVD player. As cheap as they are now, there's really not much holding a person back. I mean 80-100 bucks gets you in progressive. That's what I did for now anyway. I felt I had to have a progressive player with the pj. It just wouldn't be right not to run 480P with the capability. So, since the dollars and cents didn't add up buying the PJ right now to go out and spend 500-1000 on a high quality ps DVD player. I just got a cheapie.

Claude, you really need to get a progressive scan DVD player.
Doug that's what I thought too.But the Faroudja DCDi in the X1 does such a good job that a progressive scan player isn't really needed. The picture is rock solid and looks fantastic. The 7700 even looks better than my PC(Sony PCV-RX660 1.8ghz P4,512DDR ram,ATI 7500 64mb Radeon All-in-Wonder,Creative Audigy Gamer, etc.) when playing DVD's.

I tried out 2 progressive scan players a JVC(XVN55SL) and a Pioneer(DV656A).The picture and sound were both inferior(more noticable motion artifacts and a thinner sound)when compared to my DVPS7700.I also find cheap players painfully slow at disc access and search functions.Plus there's just something wrong about having a DVD player that cost less than the cables connecting it to your system.

I work at a retail electronics store so I have been able to play around with a few other players. The one I would like to try next would be the Phillips DVD963SA(also SACD)it has the latest Faroudja DCDi chip in it(and a retail price of $549 in Canada). But I think ultimately I will hold out and see how the new Sony DVPNC555ES performs when it is available.

                                            Hey Trevor,
Most vendors have the X1 priced around $1500-1800(Canadian dollars of course).I may be going to work for a local A/V Hi-Fi shop here in Edmonton that also carries many types of front projo's.If I do I'll see if I can work out special pricing for HTGUIDE Forum members.

The new firmware (version 4.1) for the X1 increases bulb life to 4000hrs.(up from the previous rating of 3000hrs) Plus if you register your X1 by Oct 31/03 you get 3yrs extra warranty(labour only) bringing to 5yrs.

Well time for an update.I've been so busy watching movies that I've spent hardly any time on the computer.

I've got over 200 hrs on the X1 now and I am still amazed at how good this little machine is.Picture quality is fantastic on DVD's and even quite watchable on regular cable TV (on Sunday we had a CFL Western final party to watch the Esks beat the Roughriders.YEAH!! )

                                                  Is it a perfect projo?No.
Is it the HT buy of the decade?Maybe.
Is it a killer HT addition for the buck?Definatly!

Just watched T3. It looked awesome!!

HD has many times the color resolution over NTSC media, and even a color calibrated display will show a visible improvement in color quality with a HD source. :T The added input resolution certainly doesn't hurt any either. 8)
