How do you know it is time to replace the lamp? I ordered a replacement for mine because the colors don't appear as vibrant and a red cast has appeared. I have had it for about 2.5 years.

I would bet a lot of them will have an onscreen warning when you get near the rated life. Your manual will probably say.
Another way to tell is when no light comes out.
In that case, the indicator LED on the front of the set will probably flash.

I got my TV back total. Total cost was $212. Hitachi paid for the parts and I picked up the labor. The light engine is the most expensive piece of the TV and now I have a brand new one. I was surprise to find out they replaced the lamp while it was in for service. So now I have a spare bulb on the shelf since I intended to replace it once the TV was returned.
The picture is better than when I first bought it.- Bottom

Good deal! One thing to remember is with the newer DLP/LCD/SXRD/LCOS etc. displays, the image changes over time as the lamp dims and heat cycles.....still have to "tweak" video setting now and then...not as often as CRTs, but they are definitely not image maintenace free yet.

Here is what I've done thus far:

by madmacWell folks, it looks like I'm cruzin' quickly into getting a new lamp for my Sony SXRD RPTV!. The picture has started to fluctuate in brightness while watching it. The timing is about right because it's been many years since I last changed it.
