Plasma vs LCD in NY Times

I saw an article in the NY Times that mentioned that LCD's are growing in popularity in relation to Plasma and tht the LCd's are getting better, bigger and cheaper. LCD research has increased dramatically and new plants are being built. They are expected to outsell plasmas as well.
At this point I would love some feedback on the various pros and cons of each based on the premise (if true) that the LCD are getting better in relation to the Plasmas.
Is there still a motion problem and are the blacks still not as deep?
The technology keeps changing as the industry does more R&D and capabilities increase.

Short version, yes there is sitll an LCD motion problem and plasma still has better blacks. LCD is getting cheaper and coming to dominate more sizes in the market segments as the fabrication requirements allow this and bigger better fabrication plants kep coming on line.

Neither tech is by any means perfect though they do continue to improve and get cheaper and bigger all the time. Generally speaking LCD will work better in a bright environment, plasma in a darker, more critical environment. They both technically have motion issues though I'll give a slight nod to plasma at this point for being mostly unnoticeable on all but the cheapest units. Same goes for black levels and shadow detail. Neither is what 'd consider "good" but plasma again gets the nod for being better. LCD's due tend to have an edge in resolution though.

I just got myself confused aud19. I always thought plasmas worked great in lighter environments because they are naturally brighter than other technologies. Hmm...

And aud19, what screens do you consider to have "good" black levels and shadow detail? I thought plamsas reigned king in that department.

LCD's have much higher peak light output abilities in general than most displays which allow them to better compete with ambient lighting.

As for black level and shadow detail honeslty no modern fixed pixel displays currently have all that stunning back level or good shadow detail. SXRD (LCOS) and DLP RPTV's are pretty good and some plasma's are adequate (Panasonic, Pioneer, Fujitsu...) None of them compare all to well with an old "fuddy-duddy" quality CRT setup in that regard though.

sounds like the consensus is that the relative merits and problems are still the same and the positive is that the prices are going down.

Pretty much. But I'll add that the problems are also being improved upon as well if not completely eliminated.

An interesting development for LCD is coming when the cost drops. If that can happen before LED BL's render it moot:
