    bad inputs?

Hi, everyone. I'm brand new to the HTGuide, and I've been reading and searching quite a bit - nice site.

Anyway, I have yet to find anyone with a problem similar to mine. I have a Toshiba 57hx81 that I'm just now getting around to using the component inputs. Problem is, anytime I have something hooked into them all I get is a blue crummy picture(@ 480p) or nothing(@ 1080i). I've tried multiple sources, so I'm sure the problem is in the set.

I'm assuming the inputs are bad, but what I need is some info on part #s etc. if anyone has anything that would help. I tried the Toshiba website, but didn't get anywhere. Thanks!

    Several things:

    1. Make sure, (It happens to every one.....do NOT let any one say different.) But make sure that the Blue RCA is to the Blue input. And Green is to Green, red to red.

    2. Make sure that the device that you have hooked to your TV is set to out put out of the component video out. Some devices you will have to hook it up via Coax, or S-Video, and then go into the menu settings and make sure that the device is set to output from Component.

    3. Make sure that the TV is set to the input that you have every thing plugged into. ( I know that it sounds silly, but looking behind the TV/side ways you get a Paralex view, and what you think is input 3 is really input 4. Once again it happens to every one!)

    4. Use something that you know works, and is simple to use. Like a DVD player.

    I hope that this helps!

What are you connecting to your TV? Try connecting a different source device (e.g. a DVD player instead of a HD STB or vice versa). Also, you could have a bad cable (yes, it happens). Try another cable, even a red-white-yellow pack-in that came with your DVD player, to rule out the cable as the cause.

To reiterate what Snap said, double check that you have the colors matched up on the cable. It happens to all of us, including me, especially if you're working in cramped, dark spaces where HT components tend to reside. It's easy to get the colors mixed up or the cables plugged into the wrong jacks.

Also, try hooking up just the green (Y) cable, and see what you get. You should get a black & white image. Then hook up the red (Pr) cable, the image should show reds now. Hook up the blue (Pb) cable, and then all colors should show. If one of the cables doesn't make a difference when you hook it up, then there is a problem with your source, cable, or TV. If you see blue where you should see red and vice versa, then you have the red & blue cables reversed.

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, I have already checked and rechecked everything you said. I know that I am not immune to the bonehead disease, but this time I must have avoided it.

I've tried my dvd - yeilded the fuzzy blue - and a cable company's box - at 1080i was black - but both devices worked in other inputs.

            That sucks,

You've had the set for what 4 or 5 years (out of warranty) and you never knew there was a problem until now. I have the same set and it's been alright, sorry man

Yeah. I actually bought the set from my father-in-law when he decided to go plasma a couple years ago.

Now that I'm finally ready to come out of the dark ages into HD I can't.

Anybody know of a phone # for Toshiba other than what they have listed on their website? For some reason I'm having trouble with that one.

What country are you located in? (This is one of those reasons a location in your profile comes in handy...wink, wink, nudge, nudge :W ) :B

As it's no longer under warranty, it would seem that contacting an authorized repair place might actually be a better route anyways... Here's a link to their Repair Centre locator (for the US):

Thanks for the link. I'll have to contact them. Florida, and I'll have to give myself a profile.
