Which would you choose and why, trying to decide. Are sony's black levels just as good as DLP's? Rainbow issue gone with the Sammys?
1080P Samsung or Sony SXRD?

I haven't even seen the SXRD but I'd likely go with it :T
First the "1080p" DLP is "wobulated" which theoretically makes no difference but IMO if given the choice between theory and fact, I'll take fact
DLP is also still single chip, SXRD is three chip which means, while improved, rainbows are still a problem and SXRD should have an edge in colour fidelity as well.
From what I read the black levels on the Sony should be better as well.
I believe the Sony is more expensive but other than that and the apparently mediocre remote control, it has no other real down sides other than accurate, though over saturated, red and green.Jason- Bottom

Ok a few things since I've seen them side by side calibrated(with avia).
1. Black level is pretty close to each other. The Samsung 1080P DLP's black level is significantly improved over their 720P variants.
2. Rainbows: Still a problem.
3. Price: They are the same. The Sony has "wings" aka speakers on the side that some folks don't like.
4. 1080P input: If you buy the HP 1080P set, it will do 1080P via HDMI, the others including the Sony will not.
Personally I'd take the SXRD.- Bottom

you can't get 1080P via HDMI for the sony....wow thats lame, I was also looking at the HP, I saw only one review but didnt think they would come off the bat with a great set to begin with since they have not done tv's before.- Bottom

Unless the set does just a good of a job scaling 1080i to 1080pOriginally posted by eddiem67Well I was going to buy the new DVDO video processor, so it kinda is....
But it's your money :yesnod: I agree it's annoying to make 1080p TV's that don't accept 1080p input (especially from BluRay touting Sony!  )But frankly I'd rather have a "better" TV from a known TV manufacturer...Jason- Bottom

Frankly we couldn't get 1080P out of the Samsung the Sony or the Mitz and all used 1080P in the language in the spec sheet.
None provided 1080P output from the HDMI input.
I'm anxious to hear somebody from these manufacturers respond to this, basically we've caught them with their pants down.
The Mitz has a hard drive (internal) that somehow displays 1080P when it's in demo mode but it will not display 1080P through HDMI, and their lit is very specific...- Bottom

My fear is that their response will be to pants us, by revving the HDMI spec in a non-backward compatible way.Originally posted by Andrew M WardI'm anxious to hear somebody from these manufacturers respond to this, basically we've caught them with their pants down.

Hmmm the mits was the other TV I was looking at since they have a 73" DLP but if the 60" SXRD if going to be better, then the Sony it is. I am now wondering if I should just wait for the mfgs to get the units to accept 1080P, obviously when the HD-DVD come out I want my TV to accept the signal, I would really hate to upgrade the TV AGAIN.- Bottom

I've been debating between the two television sets, Sammy 5678W 56" or Sony SXRD 50/60". My previous TV, Sony 55XS955 55" was stolen from my home last Sunday (11/13) and I received a reimbursement check a few days ago. Personally, I've ignored the SDE with my 55" (sitting 8.5' away) and with it properly tuned, it was outstanding for a LCD @ 720p (no visible bad pixels). I'm fully aware all TVs have pros and cons, after reading 400+ pages (on AVS) and a few on here, the new Sammy xxx8W models out weight the SXRD in cons, however, the blue-hue issue with the SXRD is inconsistent for this price of a set and does not occur with every set.
One message thread that concerns me (AVS again) - how many people actually see the infamous DLP Rainbow watching dark movies {e.g. Batman Returns, etc,.}?
The Picture quality on both sets is absolutely amazing from the store-front view...I don't base everything on what I see at the retailer.
Your help would be appreciated!
Thanks - scout- Bottom

I just bought a DLP TV and I think the picture on it is better than the Sony. We did a side by side comparison in my house and the DLP won with a better image quality. It's also a Sammy since they worked with TI to develop the DLP chip. To me, and as it seems with most Sony products, you are paying for a name. I'm not saying the image is bad on the Sony, not by a long shot, but the price difference...to me...you don't get what extra you are paying for.
Now, for the rainbows on DLP... yes you will get them. It's more of a process of training yourself, to make them go away. If you have a high contrast image, full black window with white lettering in the center...you will notice it if you turn your head/eyes really quick. Sometimes with dim movies (like Batman Returns the fast action your eyes are all over the screen)...you will get the rainbow effect. While annoying to some and not to others, it just depends on how your optic nerve responds. Initially I almost returned the TV because of the Rainbow effect, as I caught it all the time, but then I learned what "I" was doing to cause the rainbow effect moreso than the image. You really need to try to keep your head still and your eyes focused more on the whole image than trying to study a single point on the screen. Now 3 or 4 weeks now have gone by and I hardly notice it, maybe once a day, or twice a week for a split second. Just depends on what you are watching. Watching HD Football I have yet to see the rainbow effect! :T I think what really helped minimize that effect is the fact I calibrated the unit and it does it FAR less now.
I think being set up extremely bright right from the factory...that really ended up causing the Rainbow effect more. Since it's now properly (as well as AVIA & DVE & Me can get it), the image is phenominal on it. It EASILY has as good of an image if not better than any Plasma/LCD I've seen to date at anyone's place/store...with very little to no rainbow effect. So I think that's a huge "thumbs up" to Sammy and their DLP TVs...
I was leary when I bought mine, now I can't get enough of it.

I went for a bit longer look at the 60" again while shopping on Saturday :P I'll say it again, closest thing to CRT I've seen in a fixed pixel display :T Of course at almost $6KCA you could buy 2 CRT RPTV's and have them ISF'd for less money  All that money for an extra ~6" of floor space still seems ridiculous to me :lol:Jason- Bottom

You forgot:All that money for an extra ~6" of floor space still seems ridiculous to me
Resolution: The 1080P set has them beat hands down. CRT's can't really do 1080I to their best unless you are talking the 65" Mits 9" CRT ones.
No Burn in: Can be a concern if you watch alot of news programs even calibrated.
No Convergence: Easy to setup set. No routine maintenance needed.
But mostly you pay for the resolution.
The SXRD is the best set I've seen yet period.- Bottom

Fair enough but...

I guess I'm one of the few that wasn't too impressed by SXRD...
I mean it's nice... is it better than DLP... nope, is it more than DLP...yet...so why pay it?!
Especially when most SXRD displays only have a 3000:1 contrast ratio and the DLPs (1080p) have a 10000:1 contrast. Sorry, I think the DLPs are equally as good as SXRD is (if not better)...and with the even next generation of three DMD chip that eliminates the "rainbow" effects. Good things to come from DLP.
Course I'm still waiting on SED, that will be gooood stuff.
That and admittedly, I'm not a huge Sony fan for their overpriced stuff... Love Playstation though.

Pewter, The Sony 60" has a 13,330:1 Contrast ratio. I'm not sure where you get your 3000:1 figures. That is MEASURED as well.
HTMagzine test
You can get one for about $4200 locally. Buying a 1080P version of the DLP Samsung is roughly the same money give or take and you get rainbows still.
I hope you saw the SXRD at anywhere but Best Buy. We all know that's not the place to view a set.
The biggest negative for SXRD for me and several others is the "wings" on the side(speakers).- Bottom

Sorry Pewter, Shane's right.... are you sure you're not talking about "regular" LCD RPTV's...?
I'll also add that besides the better contrast as Shane noted and no rainbows it's also not "wobulated"
When we actually get 3-chip 1080p DLP's at similar prices then we'll have some competition IMO :yesnod: Until then SXRD is the "king" of fixed pixel displays IMO.
Trev, not all of us have the financial resources to buy a new multi-thousand dollar TV every 6 months :F
:
As for the Toshiba... it's a nice set but IMO if you have to have a fixed pixel RPTV, SXRD is the one to beat at this point. Otherwise just buy a Hitachi CRT RPTV (or Mitsubishi for those living South of the 49)Jason- Bottom

Cant get 1080p anyways!!
all of these tvs that are 1080p are no use to us now anyways. there is not even any broadcasts that are 1080p yet anyways. how do you expect to get a broadcast that is higher than HD when not all the broadcasts now are even fully HD which is 720p. when you are buying a 1080p television now, you are not goin to notice much of a difference between that and and a 720p set. i have seen what 1080p looks like, samsung has made a hard drive that hooks up to their 1080p sets. i have seen it on the samsung 5688 set and it is phenominal. if anybody lives in the massachusetts or connecticut area or anyone knows about Bernie's Tv's you can check it out there. i know it is in the springfield mass store, if you go check it out ask for my friend Steve. thanks. let me know if you have any questions. ttyl- Bottom

Trigger was pulled
I bought the 60" SXRD (3850.00), out of the box the thing was too bright, and too red. After an hour of calibration and watching a few movies, this unit has some of the best detail I've seen in awhile. Color was a little too rich for me at first coming from a RPTV, but my brain is adjusting. The black levels are incredible, and screen door effect is very minimal but still there. The new toshiba at CES is right up there with this unit, as well as the new samsung LED dlp (50" version). I can say I think I made the right choice, now if only the qualia could come down on price so I can upgrade :T
Guys this is one tv you can go buy without telling your wife, she will get mad at first, but when she sits down to watch it, she'll will love it, like mine did.
My HDMI cable will be here today, so I am going to run a comparison tonite, see if there is any difference with HDMI vs Component.- Bottom

Check out the Toshiba CinemaSeries DLPs too. I was tempted to go with the SXRD myself. After a month of research I looked at the Sammys, Toshibas and the Sony. At first glance I wanted the Sony, even with its ugly handle bar speakers. I got a chance to check out the Toshiba 56XM195 and the SXRD side by side. The Sony's picture looked much brighter...at first. The salesrep (who actually had some knowledge; went to Video Only here on west coast and the only sell TVs and HT equip) adjusted the brightness and switched the lamp from power save and it jumped to life. The ice of the hockey rink and jersey numbers on the players during a hockey game looked awesome. The Toshiba's white levels were brighter but didnt wash out the other colors. And the contrast was still excellent. The Sonys brightness couldnt get higher. In fact you couldn't adjust the picture nearly as much as the Tosh.Originally posted by eddiem67Which would you choose and why, trying to decide. Are sony's black levels just as good as DLP's? Rainbow issue gone with the Sammys?
So I went with the Tosh needless to say. Got a bigger TV for a cheaper price and the picture is equal if not better. Don't just take my word for it find a HT specialty store and sit down and actually look before you choose. Research online can only begin to help you decide anyways.- Bottom
