    Projector calibration and setup

Does anyone know of any DVD's or computer programs available for calibration of a HT projector? I just recently purchased a projector and would like to get it calibrated correctly, I can get close by a visual but I am sure it could use some tweaking to get it closer. :T

    Thanks!!

For a useful set of calibration procedures with fairly easy-to-follow instructions, try Digital Video Essentials by Joe Kane Productions. It covers both video and audio setup.

While is is an "essential" tool for HT enthusiasts, it is a lot harder to get than it should be. I couldn't find it at any store in Houston, whether we're talking the mass market barns like Best Buy and Circuit City or the specialty HT emporiums.

A lot of stores in Houston used to carry its predecessor, "Video Essentials", but are not stocking the current "Digital" version. (A couple of stores said they had it when I called ahead, but when I was at the store, they couldn't locate it.) Had to order it online.

Another disc that accomplishes the same thing is Avia. Ditto on "hard to find" in Houston. Perhaps the retailers in KC are doing a better job of stocking the important stuff; otherwise, you'll need to find an online source.

By the way, both Avia and Digital Video Essentials come in both a "regular priced" DVD that most of us can take advantage of without special training or tools, and an astronomically priced "professional" version that include a lot of additional technical material that requires the use of expensive test instruments to take advantage of. Typically the "pro" editions are used by professional installers.

I have the earlier Joe Kane Video Essentials as well as Avia and I do find that for the novice the latter is probably the easier to use and understand. It has a great section, too on how to set proper contrast and black levels for digital projectors.
