Pe (Thiele/Small Parameter)
In loudspeaker design, "Pe" stands for thermal power handling. It is one of the Thiele/Small parameters used to specify a loudspeaker driver's ability to handle electrical power without experiencing thermal overload or damage. When an audio signal is applied to the loudspeaker's voice coil, electrical energy is converted into mechanical motion, generating sound. However, some of the electrical power is converted into heat due to resistive losses in the voice coil. If the electrical power applied to the driver exceeds its thermal power handling capacity, the voice coil's temperature can rise to a point where the adhesive bonding the voice coil wire and the former or diaphragm material could fail. This can result in a loss of driver performance, increased distortion, or even permanent damage to the loudspeaker.
The Pe specification is typically expressed in watts (W) and indicates the maximum continuous power the driver can handle without overheating. It is an important parameter for loudspeaker designers, manufacturers, and users, as it helps determine the appropriate amplifier power and ensures the loudspeaker is used within its safe operating range. Operating the loudspeaker within its rated power handling ensures optimal performance, longevity, and reliability.
