I've seen the picture of the DVD cover on one of the recent issues of Home Theater Magazine with their top 100 DVDs of all time that they did. I've checked the SuperBit website and it's not posted there, I've looked at all the major chain retailers that has a BIG selection of DVDs, including most of the SuperBit versions of them too. This is one of the movies that I look for every time I'm near a store that sells DVDs and still no luck. Does it even exist or is it only availible in other countries or something?
SuperBit of Gladiator?

If it is a Superbit then its a japanese or korean type release(most likely Japanese). For me the Picture and sound are so top notch on the Region 1 release, I haven't thought twice about upgrading at all. Personally I don't find "all region" type players useful for me.- Bottom

Shane's right, if it's a Superbit it's not Region 1. I know - I'd own it.

I'm afraid if we actually get a SuperBit edition of Gladiator, the Coliseum might look fake and those Romans in the stands will look more like CGI puppets than real people. (Maybe the DVD cover was a CGI creation by Home Theater Magazine?) :>)

Hehe Burke.
Yes, it's Japanese.
I've been waiting for SB Gladiator to hit N.A. Shelves for some time.
Japan's had it for awhile. I think both Europe (zone2?) and The aussie's should be getting it soon.
I heard its pretty good.
Here's a quick glance at it.

Same here(region 2)...
Superbit Gladiator is available since at least one year :T
I find it really frustrating though, that Columbia Tristar almost never really bothers to treat their "standard" editions with a DTS soundtrack. Every time when a "new" title is being released (like tears of the sun, charlies angels 2, bad boys 2, SWAT, big fish (I believe) and, at the time, Spiderman and XXX, I have to decide whether or not to wait for a superbit that is in no means certain to appear (which is, is some of the above cases, a good thing :B ).
For me, the big difference is the DTS soundtrack. I do have a projector so I can and do appreciate the difference in picture quality, but if a standard edition is already in DTS (like gladiator and Terminator 3), I don't feel really tempted to splash out on a superbit edition. I guess Columbia realises this too, otherwise we would have seen more standard DTS titles.
Luckily my brother isn't that picky so if I find a movie to be good(the other day I was pleasantly surprised by Bad Boys 2), I can always make him happy with the standard edition and go for the superbit.
The best example of a recent superbit release has to be Spiderman: it works like a charm. You can really notice the enhanced PQ on a projector and the DTS soundtrack is much better.

This is how I too justify upgrading, just hand it off to my, not so picky, brother-in-law.Luckily my brother isn't that picky so if I find a movie to be good(the other day I was pleasantly surprised by Bad Boys 2), I can always make him happy with the standard edition and go for the superbit.

Not strange when you consider that Columbia doesn't own the rights to those films here in the USA.Strange that you guys don't have it there usually it's the other way round.- Bottom

Just to dot i's and cross t's, our current Region 1 release does have DTS-ES (half-bit-rate) and DD-EX soundtracks, of which the DTS sounds mah-velous IMO, and a PQ that is pretty much eye-candy, but I'd still go for a Superbit..

Yeah, about this superbit... there’s probably one other thing I should mention. The European versions of Gladiator (standard and superbit) do not have a DTS es Discrete soundtrack!
Of course, es matrix is being provided for but still....
I guess that if I were to live in your part of the world, I would certainly stick with the standard edition (besides brushing up my english language skills :W ). I wouldn't bother with an imported superbit version.
O, BTW, Chris: Jurassic Park is definitely not available on superbit in this part of the world. I would know....
I still use an imported region 1 DTS version(with a lfe channel 10 db softer than it should be  ), since there is no DTS version available over here ( :a> unless you would like to have the french soundtrack in DTS es on JP 3 8O ).

Anyone so steamy hot for an R2 gladiator that I should look for it tomorrow (my Friday, it being Thursday pm for me at the moment) night? Going DVD shopping in Tokyo to get Hero R2 release. And maybe Innocence, although I am leaning towards no on that since it has no english STs.

Yeah, I know.. Unfortunately at the time I bought my import dvd's through a somewhat shady retailer who said that he couldn't make the trade (which, at the time, was indeed during a turning point in holland: retail of region 1 DVD’s through shops was already forbidden and sanctions were becoming more severe). :crazy:You can get that replaced you know?
Oh well, I just turn up the lfe level by 10db when watching this movie(that is one occasion where I do appreciate the "on the fly” adjustment buttons on my Rotel rsx1055)
Of course, there is still nothing preventing me form doing my purchases online @ dvdpricesearch, but even then it's quite a hassle to trade in faulty dvd's (lip sync problems with moulin Rouge anyone? :blah: ).
Now with the increasing world wide dvd releases and pretty much the same specifications, I don't buy that much online anymore. However, every time I want to make a non DTS purchase, I always check online. It's a good thing to know that you can always look elsewhere to get the specs you want.

When I attended High School there were other things on my mind besides learning.
Just watched Gladiator and the story behind it is out of this world, Ceasar is a ruthless nutcase and it's just too bad about Maximus and what he endured.
For all you who paid attention in school.....was this movie about the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire?
.....needless to say I really like the movie.......Pat- Bottom

Patt,
The fact portion is that the Romans had the Gladitorial fights, then they were banned, then they came back, then Rome fell. I think that is the extent of the facts of the movie. Other than the owner that was a Gladiator. He was based on a true man of history.
I agree with you that it is a TOP NOTCH flick! Love it. One of my top 3 favorites of all time. Surpassed only by Braveheart. :TThe Bitterness of poor quality last longer than the joy of low prices.- Bottom
