The first version starred Mick Jagger. I didn't see it so I can't compare the two. This version stars Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Geoffery Rush and Naomi Watts, who looks a lot like fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman.
Ned Kelly is an Australian Western set in the 1800s. Kelly ( Ledger) and his family are Irish immigrants who are not looked upon too kindly by the pro-British constabularly. As a pre-teen, Ned won an award ( a sash) for saving another kid from drowning. It was the last good thing he ever did. As a 16 year old he is arrested for stealing a horse and serves 3 years in prison. After his release, trouble just follows him and his family. A bad member of the local constabularly tries to put the make on one of Ned's sisters. Ned isn't there, but his brothers are and the cop is wounded. The cop says Ned is the culprit. Then, to make matters worse, Ned's mom is arrested and thrown in jail, and thus begins the tale of Ned Kelly, who along with his brothers, become legendary outlaws. They take to robbing banks, and when they destroy copies of mortgages, Ned becomes somewhat of a Robin Hood. But in truth, I suspect that Ned was just a really bad irish lad with a mean disposition.
The film drags a bit in the middle, but the shootout with Geoff Rush and his 100 constables is a good one. Doubt if I'd ever care to watch this again, though, so I'd suggest it as a rental.
PQ is okay, as is the DTS soundtrack, but there are many dark scenes and even daylight scenes have muted colors.
