    Pirates of the Caribbean

I actually missed this movie in the theaters, but even though I've heard mixed reviews on it, I heard enough good reports about the movie to warrant me buying the DVD.

So I ordered it online and actually recieved it early (about a week ago), but I had planned on watching it with some friends (who had really enjoyed seeing the movie in the theater) so I've held off on seeing the movie ahead of time. But since it officially was released today, I decided to take a peek at the video quality of the DVD.

From what I've seen (jumping around to different scenes) the picture quality looks very good and the sound (that I heard) was good as well.
I listened to it in DD 5.1, but there is a DTS audio mix as well, which I'll be listening to when I watch the movie for real.

Apparently it has over 10 hours of extra goodies, including 19 deleted scenes, commentaries, featurettes, and a producer's photo diary.

Anyway I just wanted to chime in here.
    It looks good so far.

    -Dean.

I've been debating whether to buy or rent this one. Let us know what you think of it after you've had a chance to view it.

I watched it last night for the first time. Thought it was a really good movie, reference quality sound. I'm not sure if their is much replay value though.

According to my wife...Johnny Depp has oodles of replay performance...if you get my drift..... :hump:

(hee hee I'm gonna get clobbered for that one)

Actually if you like Johnny Depp this is a tour de force. I think it has replay-ability. It was a very fun movie.

        Kiera Knightly is a looker.
        Solid story.
        Wicked Special Effects.
        ...what's not to like?

Its an okay movie from what I saw today. Not one of Johnny Depps best. One question though. Did anyone have any pixelation problems with their disc? I had several occurances where I goto what looked like picture drop it. Could play the same scene over an over and it happened at the same spot. Must be a bad disc.

I sampled all through the DVD and had no picture problems.

I got to see this one on my last trip. Overall, I thought it was a good movie. Thumbs up. There were some aspects that seemed silly or even dumb--Johnny Depp's acting is rather over the top. I've always enjoyed him as an actor, and although his performance is odd in this movie, it does mostly fit the feel of the flick.

Not something I'm going to buy, but it was worth watching.

Turns out it was the disc. Tried a new one last night and all is fine.

In an interview, Depp said he patterned his pirate character after Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. I hope to watch this flick tonight and see for myself.

Actually, I can see that, George. There's a few scenes where Depp hasn't shown any signs that he's been drinking (or his character, I suppose) but he speaks like he's drunk. Interesting choice of models there.

Saw it last night. Agree with Chris's assessment. And yeah, if you look at Depp's character's actions, you can see Keith Richards.

BTW, watched a BIO on Depp. Seems he wanted to be a musician ( he actually started out as a guitar player in a band) as music was his first love. The band went to LA to find success but Depp ended up acting to put food on the table, then before he knew it acting took over his life. He's not your average Hollywood type and prefers to live in France with the French gal he met there. So, being a musician, I can understyand why he adopted Keith Richards' slurred speech and odd swagger.

I didn't see this in the cinema, but saw it twice on DVD already. Good quality video and audio, but neither is reference quality. Actually, I was counting on the audio to be more agressive, especially since it's a DTS ES mix.

I think it's a cool flick, great acting, great music, great effects, and with a nice selection of extras it's definitely a keeper for me.

                        Regards,

Audun, try the Dolby Digital track. I found it much more lively than the DTS track. The DD had a lot of very good low end stuff compared to the DTS, which I found strange. Usually it's the other way around. Do you suppose they have the DTS and DD mixed up in the menu ? When playing the DD track, the back channel flag signal light on my Denon came on, and in the past, this has only happened when playing DTS ES tracks.
