Die Another Day not all that bad

I've been reading comments about this latest Bond flick, and many don't like it. Could be they are not used to seeing Bond getting the tar kicked out of him. As for me, I felt it stacked up pretty well against the other Brosnan Bond flicks. I did think the CGI was overdone here, though. All in all, the usual Bond storyline, great looking gals ( Halle Berry, wow), terrific picture quality and fabulous sound.

What more can one ask for in an evening's entertainment ?

As for all the extras on Disc 2... I don't know if I'll ever get around to watching that.

When I first saw a DVD demo in early 1997 by Sony before DVD was available as a commercial product, the "extras" feature was something that sounded really cool, something I thought I would find as fascinating as the movies themselves. From the advance hype, I assumed that, in aggregate, they would be something like the equivalent of taking a course in film interpretation and movie making, which I had done in college.

As it turns out, rather than being incisive insights into the movies themselves or the movie-making craft, most of the extras I have actually watched have typically turned out to be not much more than extended marketing puff pieces, or self-indulgent reminisces by the cast or crew.
So, it is unlikely that I will ever get around to watching many more of those "second discs" either.

I saw this movie in the theater, and this is the first Bond film that I was tempted at NOT buying on DVD (I own ALL of the others).

I didn't have any problem with the beginning of the film. In fact I found the gritty side of the spy business (going wrong) to be refreshing from the traditional Bond-as-Superman approach of many of the series.

But then by the middle of the film it went back to the same old Bond formula, which is predictable but exciting.

The BIG problem that I have with DAD was that it veered into fantasy, with unrealistic elements and scenes.

The invisible car bugged me, but I guess that they were worried about competing with the spectacular fantasy effects of The Matrix, X-Men2, and Lord of the Rings so much that they couldn't help themselves.

But it was SOOOO plainly obvious that the hang gliding, surfboarding, iceburg dodging, tidalwave scene was a total setup for a future video game.

It's just like Mission Impossible 2, where the director set up the various action/visual scenes, and THEN the writer had to fill-in the story to set up the next visual scene.

Except with this Bond film, it was the video game makers that setup the scene. Which sucks!

Like Space Jam, and Vegas Vacation, when a movie starts becoming a TV commercial, it loses all integrity to me.

But since it was on sale for $14, I decided to get the DVD to complete the collection, just like I bought Star Trek 5, Back to the Future 2, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, and Highlander 2.

To be honest, there were a few Roger Moore Bond movies that were so campy that they were even lamer, but this one DID bug me.

        -Dean.

Come on Dean, tell us how you really feel, lol. I hadn't thought of the video game angle, but your right, that one's to dang obvious. I felt the scene was way over the top anyway. I thought the invisible car was pretty cool though.

Andrew, I liked Halle in the movie. I thought she played the part just right.

I have to chime in here and say, there is no such thing as a bad Bond film, there is only good and gooder

That being said, I would have to admit, this is not one of my favorite Bond flixs, however being a fan, I had to own it. I agree with Andrew and did not warm to Halle's character as much as some of the other Bond girls. Even Denise Richards (Lame acting in TND) was more to my liking. I like Denise (even though she can't act) and I like Halle, but I didn't think this part suited her.

I'm not going to get into what scene was bad, good or believable for in a Bond flix, as long as they play the Bond Guitar riff; dung-da, dung, dung dung, da-dung, da-dung, dung, dung.. or the horns that do the dee, dee, dee, dee, duh, dee, dee, da, dee, da, dee.... All is believable and forgiven.

I did find the Bond as a prisoner for more than a year to be quite a different departure from most Bonds.

I think the Video is awesome looking and very crisp and clear. I most certainly would use this DVD for a reference image or Demo DVD.

This one wasn't one of my favorite Bond films. It does have some out-of-the-ordinary scenes, especially the start and one absolutely priceless moment with Moneypenny at the end, but I just wasn't captivated by this one. Yes the stunts were amazing, the camera-work was flawless, the babes were . . . well. . . flawless too. Halle - always easy on the eyes - did okay, but the "bitch" comment was just wrong, it didn't work at all. Miss Frost was yummy. BUT, as a whole, it didn't pull me in like many of the other Bond tales. I'll probably wind up buying it, but I'm not rushing anywhere.

My favorite Bond girl of recent times was the one in Goldeneye. She will be tough to beat in my opinion for a long time. Sure, Terry Hatcher is real eye candy in the World is not Enough, and I like her a lot, but her part just wasn't large enough to beat out the Goldeneye girl.

In the end, I really don't care if a Bond film qualifies for an Acadamy. as long as it's a fun ride with some fun Bond tricks and toys, and the babes, well, I am happy. Actually, there was much less gadgetry in this one I thought than normal. I mean the villians are usually all unbelievable. That's what makes it Bond, partly.

I thought DAD was entertaining enough for me because my expectation don't force James Bond to adhere to a pure realistic/gritty foundation. I'm willing to forgive some unbelievable stuntwork just because it's part of the pacakge that comes with the franchise.

I was just thinking last night as I opened my Die Another Day DVD, I wonder why we don't have any DTS Bond films. When I got to the DVD menu, I decided to check out languages just to make sure DD 5.1 was active prior to starting the film and what do you know! DTS ES!!! I was shocked, I was pleased,...

Yowza! I've been waiting a long time for this. Releasing on December 2nd, it's a great, but harsh, movie that William Freidken directed and stars William Petersen and Willem Dafoe.
