    Die Another Day

I thought DAD was entertaining enough for me because my expectation don't force James Bond to adhere to a pure realistic/gritty foundation. I'm willing to forgive some unbelievable stuntwork just because it's part of the pacakge that comes with the franchise.

    The Good:

The premise was somewhere we've never seen Bond having to go through. But he did sort of re-acclimate himself a bit too quickly.

The villains had some grit to them. The extent they went to become who they were was mind-boggling if you thought about it. Their big bad weapon was big and bad. How much of it is actually possible remains an exercise for the viewer.

The stunts were just plain fun to watch, sure, there's some throw-back 1960's stunt work going on, but it gave it a retro feel to the stunts. And I've never seen some of the stuff that was in this film, and the second unit pulled off most of it well enough. There's quite a few OMG stunts, and there's a few implausible stunts that you either buy or don't.

The opening credits footage was good in that it progressed the plot along at the same time.

James Bond got his mojo back in this film. I'm pretty sure his middle name must be "Randy".

Q was great and exasperated as always. He still comes up with the nifty toys.

    Moneypenny's money shot was priceless.

    The Okay:

Halle Berry's Jinx doesn't come across as a sharp secret agent type, and I would not go see her in a "Jinx" movie because there's just not enough to work with. Her role in this film as written stumbled to give her some credentials to make her believable as Jinx.

M was more crotchety than ever before.

Miranda Frost was aptly named. I think she got short-shrifted in some character development bits.

    The Bad:

Madonna's theme song - I thought it was wretched. Electronic songs are not what James Bond theme songs should be, they should be sung with passion, and have a solid orchestral backing. Madonna missed badly with this song.

Also, Madonna's part as Verty, the fencing instructor, was average, she's just not a good actress.

Michael Madsen was wasted in this film.

The plot was a bit hokey. I think too many films are jumping on the "North/South Korea DMZ as the global hot spot in the world" bandwagon where unrest is just a few committed terrorist away.

I have it 3 stars or a grade of B (for Bond).

How would your compare Halle Berry's Jinx to Michelle Yeoh's Wai-Lin?

I always wanted to see Michelle in another Bond movie.

Still sounds like a good romp to me.

Regarding Michael Madsen. This guy has better acting chops than he's been given credit for. He needs a new agent IMHO.

I'd go watch a Michel Yeoh spy film over a Halle Berry Jinx film.

Pat I agree 100 percent with your review. We saw it last night and all the points you raised were the same ones I was about to write about so thanks for saving my fingers!

Halle was easy to watch but like pat said she didn't come across competent enough to warrent her having her own movie...I mean bond saved her life twice in the movie.

I loved the car! It was nice to see a british auto make it into the movie again...and they even had a nice Jag in there as well.

The puns were flying left and right and not just from Bond this time but from everyone so the humour was right up my alley....granted a lot were either subtle or goaners but still it was better then the usual expected dialog in bond flixs.

The one thing we've come to expect in a bond movie is lots of violence but its always shown without the gore. By that I mean when someone gets shot there's usually little to no blood shown which I commend. As an example there's a scene where a guy gets his arm cut off with a laser...but in true bond fashion the action takes place below the screen so there's no visual gore that could easily have been added in where it a more typical movie. Anyway where I'm going with this is that the language used typically follows suit in that there's usually little fowl language replaced instead with witt. This is unfortunatly where I was dissapointed in Jinx's comment at the end of the film where she called her adversary a b!tch...while she was playing an american (sorry!) I didn't think that line fit with the rest of the movie. Of course i'm no saint with regard to fowl language, I work for Ducks Unlimited after all but there was just something about the scene that rubbed me the wrong way.

All in all though its a much stronger movie the last effort and it was nice to see some of the female characters have a meaningful role other then just a pretty face...not that either were hard to look at:LOL:

As pat mentioned you walk into a bond film expecting a certian type of movie and this won't disappoint you.

Welllllll, this one is a compendium of all the other Bond movies - slick cars, bad bad bad guys, lot's of high-tech, sexy women, lot's of witty dialog, etc. Also, it does have an unexpected twist at the start and an absolutely great Moneypenny scene to help it along at the end, but if you've seen the other Bond films, then you've seen this one. I may get some flak for this, but Pierce Brosnan is my favorite Bond. Suave, deboniar and with a menacing coldness to him, he epitomizes the super secret agent. But, Halle Berry just didn't work as an agent and the "B...." comment was bad. It did not fit in as Andrew said. Yes she's pretty and sexy but she didn't work for me in this role. Now, Miss Frost on the other hand . . . whew!

Park your tongue firmly in your cheek, suspend your disbelief and go enjoy another in the ongoing line of Bond films. I give it :25: out of :5:

Connery is still my number one Bond, but Brosnan comes in second, and Timothy Dalton right behind Brosnan. Roger Moore never did much for me as Bond, and Lazenby only did one, so it probably isn't fair to rate him on that basis. Dalton offered a darker side to Bond and the two he made are real favorites of mine.

For me what makes brosnan bond is that he's played that role all his life. I remember watching reminton steele back when it was on TV and even then he really was playing Bond so its a natural fit for me

I maybe wrong on this, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Brosnan gave up the chance to play Bond earlier because of his involvement in the Remington Steele tv series.

That's correct George, he was their choice even then. When he wouldn't opt out of the Remington Steele shoot, the Bond producers' went with Timothy Dalton.

I believe it was the other way around. NBC wouldn't release him from his Remington Steel contract.

Either way, Brosnan has really made up for lost time. He's apparently signed for another Bond flick, but that may be his last. Hope not.

I can see why he wouldn't want to get type cast into the bond roll but honestly he's beeing doing that roll for so long its to late...even in tailor of panama he wasn't too far from his usuall bond personality.

Well, I made a trip to the big screen last night (not common for me) to see "Die Another Day".

Let me start by saying, I don't see the big issue with Halle's performance or her use of the "b" word. I think the timing with the use of the "word" was accurate and, a pretty typical response in the situation. As for her acting, I never thought Halle to be a great actress however, I saw nothing to gripe about with "Jinx". I think there could be other issues at work here for some (of course this is my opinion).

Overall, I had a great time watching this film. I thought that it delivered what most "Bond" fans look forward to in these films. I also enjoyed them finally showing that "Bond" is not all powerful (Jinx wasn't the only one which required saving!).

And the theater had the sound perfect for this movie. I felt my seat rumble many times during the film. It should make an excellent dvd.

This was a good sit back and enjoy type of Bond film, much better than the last. Bond did readapt pretty quickly didn't he? I don't see what the fuss is with Jinx. I wouldn't go see her in a movie, she wasn't that good. Yeah Halle looked great! But the character was missing something. Oh well, I guess an Oscar can open quite a few doors.

I really liked the car, now that's a bond car! Vrroooom. Of course the racing on ice was a bit much with those 20" wheels. But hey it's Bond.

This will definitely be in my Bond collection.

He is 75 and was taking part as a celebrity guest in a stage show and ended up collapsing during a song and dance routine.
