    Something from 1957

    HEAVEN KNOWS MR. ALLISON

It is a 2nd world war film, set in the Southseas. It stars Robert Mitchum and Debroah Kerr.

Mitchem, a tough US marine, has survived an attack at sea and washes up on what appears to be a deserted island. But he soon discovers the only inhabitant is a nun ( Kerr). For the rest of the film they fight to survive when the island is re-inhabited by a batallion of Japanese soldiers.

There is plenty of action, but the underlying theme here is love as Mitchum falls for the pretty nun.

It is directed by John Huston and you can't help but notice the resemblance to another of his films about a man , a woman and survival: notably The African Queen.

This is a 20th Century Fox dvd and the Cinemascope picture quality is okay, considering the age, but the soundtrack is very poor. Still, it is a film I last saw in a theater in 1957, so I am pleased to have it in my collection.

I 'll have to give this one a look. I enjoyed the African Queen (saw it as a child) so I'm sure this will be equally entertaining.

Thanks for the tip George! 8)

Stars Robert Mitchum as Allison, a WW2 marine who washes up on a deserted island in the Pacific. Left behind on the island is a nun ( Deborah Kerr ). Allison takes it upon himself to become the nun's protector after the island is taken over by the Japanese. During their fight for survival, Allison...

This great classic starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn has finally come to North America on Blu-ray and DVD. I had it on tape, then on laserdisc and eventually on a dvd import that had a transfer similar to the laserdisc, but now I am thrilled that it is on Blu-ray, and with a lot of hardwork...

      Cape Fear

Tonight I sat down and watched the 1961 version of Cape Fear.
This is Robert Mitchum at his disgustingly best!
      Gregory Peck, isn't bad either.
This is streamlined, tight story telling.
Robert Mitchum keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
      The transfer...

      Cape Fear the original...

Because this is an older film (released in 1961) and in black and white, it will probably get passed over for the newer (Martin Scorcese) version in color with DD sound. But that is a shame.
As much as I liked Scorcese's version, the original is much more chilling, and the B&W transfer befits...
