    Cape Fear

Tonight I sat down and watched the 1961 version of Cape Fear.
This is Robert Mitchum at his disgustingly best!
    Gregory Peck, isn't bad either.
This is streamlined, tight story telling.
Robert Mitchum keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The transfer is very good, I saw nothing to destract me from this movie. Universal did a nice job on this! But then again I was so engrossed in the storyline/ acting I might not have noticed any problems if they did pop up.
Sound is mono, is clean, and works as well as it needs to.

This weekend comes the 91 version.

Although I enjoyed the later edition of Cape Fear, there is something creepier about the original.Maybe it was the B&W picture, or maybe it was Mitchum making my flesh crawl.BTW, if you liked Mitchum in this, be sure to see Night Of The Hunter, a 1955 B&W release where he plays a really scary baddy.

Yes, Night of the Hunter is a favorite of mine.
I bought it the day it came out on DVD...L-O-V-E...H-A-T-E...you aren't kidding this is another creepy movie. Mitchum always had a style of his own.
Another point, if you watch "the Longest Day" much of the acting is very wooden...until Mitchum steps in front of the camera. All of the sudden the acting becomes much more relaxed, therefore believable.

        Cape Fear the original...
        by George Bellefontaine
Because this is an older film (released in 1961) and in black and white, it will probably get passed over for the newer (Martin Scorcese) version in color with DD sound. But that is a shame.
As much as I liked Scorcese's version, the original is much more chilling, and the B&W transfer befits...
