    Barney's Version

A good adaptation of the excellent Mordecai Richler novel that is made better than the sum of its parts by very good and excellent performances--especially by Paul Giamatti (sp?) and Dustin Hoffman.

I recommend watching the film first and reading the book afterwards. The first will be entertaining and the second will be something to savour.

Too late for me, Paul. I read the book several years ago and loved it. I am curious, though, as to just how closely the film will follow the novel. I found at times the book was difficult to follow but I`m sure it was written that way on purpose, so I do wonder how all this will be handled in the film. I`m not sure who plays who in the film, but those are two great actors there.

Giamatti is Barney (and he's channelling Richler). Hoffman plays his dad. It's not a perfect film (could have used tighter editing and one critic pointed out a shortcoming that agree with--the filmmakers tried to shoehorn a few too many things from the book into the movie). However, I rarely let the perfect be the enemy of the good and so I still recommend a viewing. I'll be adding it to my collection at some point.

        Have You Read The Book?
        by David Meek
In another post about Lord Of The Rings I mentioned how the images in the film matched the mental pictures I had formed many years earlier while reading the trilogy, and The Hobbit for the first time. This added greatly to my enjoyment of the movie as it gave me a feeling of immersion in this story...

It's a book entitled IN HARM'S WAY. Yes, I know there was a film called IN HARM'S WAY starring the Duke, but this book is about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Remember Quint talking about this in Jaws? Well the book is something else and I am far from finished reading it. But it's one of those...

        Flipped a nice little film
        by George Bellefontaine
Rob Reiner wrote and directed this film ( based on a novel by Wendelin Van Draanen ). It is a somewhat sentimental coming of age film starring Callan McAuliffe and Madeline Carroll as the teenagers who come together as pre-teens, fall apart as teens and come together again. Supporting cast includes...

Thinking I was walking into yet another Holocaust film, this film was a major pleasant surprise!. This is not a holocaust film at all. This film does a lot of things right and captures beautifully the lives of two young children, their parents, and a young Jewish man they decide to harbor in Germany...

        Book Of Eli
        by George Bellefontaine
Eli ( Denzel Washington ) has a very special book in his possession and has been charged with the responsibility of delivering the book to a location in the west. But one man ( Gary Oldman ), who knows what type of book Eli is carrying, wants it badly and will do anything to gain possession of it....
