    Adult story telling!

Are you tired of all the movies made for the low common denominator, or the aways raging testosterone bunch???
Then tomorrow run down to your favorite DVD outlet and pickup "Proof of Life".
A well told story that's more psychological than anything, with action at the correct times...a romance...it's implied but never happeneds.
Sit back and enjoy an adult's action movie...more story than bullets!

      Hi Kenny,

Picked it up last week while shopping in CostCo with ThomasW- I'd heard a few things about it, and decided to give it a try. Haven't watched it yet- just barely home, and had a friend's son's graduation and the other son's birthday this weekend, plus stuff happening with my daughter... seems hard to find time to watch movies, some months!

Isn't that the wonderful thing about home theater, it's there when YOU have the time.

You're so right, Kenny- when I have the time, as opposed to when the Movie Theater has the time- usually not the same thing at all! Maybe that's why it's been a couple of months since I've been in a theater.

It's also why I explain to my lady friend that I have all of these unopened, unwatched DVD's around- if I had watched them all, it would be like having a wine cellar full of empty bottles. Well, not really empty, maybe more like half full, since you can get a lot of pleasure out of the second and third time around!

I've also taken to selected purchases of TV shows on DVD- for "bite size" viewing opportunities with more limited time- and DVD transfers of filmed TV shows beat the pants off cable and satelite for video quality, even scaled up to 4:3 XGA!

          Regards,

I need to get some of those "bit size" viewing items you speak of. I too have times that I just don't have time, or want to sit for a 2 to 3 hour movie, but would love to watch an hour show.
Babylon 5 is coming soon! that'll be my first.

Finally got around to viewing Proof Of Life. You hit it dead on, Kenny. This is an excellent film. It surprises me it didn't do as well as it should have at the boxoffice. I'm really getting to like everything this Crowe fella does. I'm looking around for that early film of his where he plays a nazi skinhead or something. It's called Romper Stomper or something like that.

In the line of adult story telling, I enjoyed "The Third Miracle" week before last before leaving on my business trip- Ed Harris and Anne Heche both give very good performances, and the music is quite good, also.

Ed Harris...say no more, I'll be hunting that one.
You can never really go wrong with anything Ed Harris is in...in fact, I just watched the Abyss last night!
Also "Enemy at the Gates" is coming out soon. Not sure it's worth buying, but it's a good sniper movie, and both Harris, and Jude Law are excellent in it...Based on a true story.

Kenny, how did you find the transfer of The Abyss? It's been awhile since I watched my SE, but I think I recall it being nonanamorphic.

True it is non-enhanced, but it is still very good, just a hair below the Criterion non-enhanced titles (Armageddon)
Overall it's a very good transfer, and easily watchable.

My first movie in 3-4 weeks, so I picked proof of life. An excellent choice, intelligent in many areas, inlcuding the action, which follows "real world" concepts and tactics much more so than we normally see in Hollwood. A great movie that may not get the attention it deserves because it uses restraint, something almost unheard of in Hollywood.

                            Regards,

I agree, a very well done movie.

Good point as well Jon, because it doesn't have all the glitter it will may be overlooked.

I'll echo the "I can't believe. . ." sentiments about this film. It's a VERY good story with an intelligent plot and believable action sequences. I've loaned it to a couple of friends and both wound up buying it afterward.

Why didn't it do better at the box office:?:

I wonder if was because of all the talk about Russel and Meg having an affair on the set. Meg was the cute little girl next door who could do no wrong. Suddenly this nasty Aussi comes along and breaks up Meg and Dennis. Which both Meg and Dennis have recently denied. It's a shame, because this really is a good film and deserves a bigger audience than it got.

Obviously, many of us are anxiously this movie. It's been discussed on and off again for the last 10 years since Toy Story 2, but Pixar specifically killed the idea many times. It's finally coming! Release day June 18th, 2010.

Disney/Pixar will be showing Toy Story 1 and 2 in theaters...

Advanced disclosure - I'm the author.

I recall a few years ago that there were some threads about "Why didn't woodworking magazines feature speaker-building stories?"

                                          Now they have.

Woodcraft magazine took a chance. The October/November 2016 issue...

I first met Jackie on "Cannonball Run". He had a very minor role and I don't believe he could speak any English at that time. However, he is such a natural born clown he had everybody laughing the little bit of time he was on the set. At that time I had never seen a Jackie Chan movie. Later...

Perhaps I have had too much wine over the Xmas holidays because I cannot find the DTS track on the Toy Story 10th anniversary edition DVD (region 2). It states on both boxes (Toy Story 1 and 2) that a DTS track is available but I cannot find it. Can anyone please advise? Many thanks in anticipation...
