Rented this one last night. Quite possibly the best picture quality wise I have seen on my Sanyo Z3. This one takes place during WWll. Not exactly a war movie though. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are the big names, but the little boy in the movie is really good. Movie is about 2h 30+min long. The wife and I really liked this one.

Glad someone else liked this movie. I loved it on the big screen and watched it again last night on DVD.
As a filmmaker I was excited to see a film with some cinematic scope to it. Some monstrous crane shots perfectly executed. Nice leisurely pace to the story telling that is a breath of fresh air.
Plus, as an ignorant American, I had no idea that Darwin suffered a air attack similar to our Pearl Harbor.- Bottom

Bought it on Blu-ray Saturday. It's a long film so I have to pick the correct time to watch it. I am definitely looking forward to it. The scenery is supposed to be jaw-dropping.- Bottom

Yeah I pretty much hear the same. But heck, how often do we get a sweeping epic these days where the scenery can be as much a player as the actors, the writers, and the director. I could watch it, just for the scenery, and probably will several times...Originally posted by David GI wanted to like it, but found it very disappointing - predictable, unoriginal
I'm sick of the storyline of Lawrence Of Arabia, but oh, that scenery. I watch it these days just to get my fill of that.
As for Australia being predictable and unoriginal, most of what we see today falls into that category, so that doesn't stop me from watching, and sometimes even enjoying a movie. If it did, I wouldn't have a lot to watch these days.- Bottom

The Kong remake was directed by that Lord Of The Rings fella, Peter Jackson. Baz Luhrmann directed Australia. He also also did Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman.Originally posted by Dougie085The previews give it a real King Kong feel. Of course a lot of the same actors and I believe same Director

Wife and I watched it last night and we both loved it. Now here is a film that was definitely made for Blu-ray and a 1080p projector. The cinematography was breathtaking, showing the different faces of Australian landscape that goes from tropical lushness, to rugged outlands, to a harsh dry desert as far as the eye can see. Even if you don't like the story, you'll be enthralled by the scenery. It's a long one, but I plan on watching it again soon. Audio is pretty spectacular, too.

Yes, Gander has a very special place in my heart. I've stopped there many times on my trans-oceanic flights. But the greatest reason was that (this is the short, abridged story version) one time I stopped, they opened up the gift shop for us at some rediculous hour, like 3 AM or something. At the register, they were selling this book, "The Day the World Came to Town", a story about what happened at Gander on 9/11/2001, when all the transatlantic flights that couldn't get inside the closed US airspace had to divert to Canadian airfields. Amazing, amazing stories about what happened that day. I was deeply moved by the book, and finished it on my next flight even before we landed.
HIGHLY recommended.

My wife and I have been catching up our movie viewing lately...
We watched this the other night, and did not care for it at all. From the opening scene, the bar fight...I knew we were in trouble.Yes,great scenery...the best thing about the picture, but the rest...
What really bugged me,my perception was...they made a mediocre 90 minute movie, then the director says,"we need more".So they went off into a completely different story...it was like two bad movies in one.
All in all it was a long two and a half hours for us...- Bottom

Well, that's Baz Luhrman for ya. He doesn't really do conventional movies. Moulin Rouge is also two movies in one. First 15 minutes of that one is totally different from the rest.

SWMBO and I got see this last night, the first DVD on our new Panny plasma.
My wife has quite a distaste for Kidman, but she loved how the new TV shows every flaw in the faces of the actresses. Well, that's a female way of looking at it I guess.
AFA the movie, we both loved it. I thought it interesting how the first half of the film had a V theatrical feel to it. Almost retro and in a South Pacific Broadway sense. I enjoy the epic format, and this one held up well against some of the classics. A decent Hollywood film is still an occasional occurrence.- Bottom
