    Bunch of new Western releases

Received a notice from Amazon that the following titles were available on dvd, and some for the first time :

RAWHIDE, stars Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward
GARDEN OF EVIL , Gary Cooper, Dick Widmark and Susan Hayward
THE GUNFIGHTER, a classic Gregory Peck western
DAY OF THE OUTLAW, a psychological western with Robert Ryan and Burl Ives
MAN OF THE WEST, Gary Cooper again
GUNFIGHT AT DODGE CITY, with Joel McRea
THE WAY WEST, an epic with Kirk Douglas, Bob Mitchum and Dick Widmark
MAN WITH THE GUN, Bob Mitchum

I saw all of the above when they were released in theaters and now I am pleased as punch to be able to watch them again in my own theater, and delighted, too, to have them in my collection.

Hi, Tex. At Amazon Canada, The Gunfighter and Rawhide were part of a FOX Box Set. The third film was The Garden Of Evil with the Coop, Widmark and Hayward. I don't know if they are available individually.

George, you da man, once again.

You have me pretty excited. I always wanted The Gunfighter and Rawhide. Don't really know the third movie of that set, but at less than $15, this is gold. Really not too much over the price of rentals at Hollywood.

The third movie is pretty good, too, Keith. You won't regret the purchase. Now about The Gunfighter : it is a true classic and belongs right up there with the likes of High Noon, Shane, The Searchers, etc. Gregory Peck as the tired gunfighter looking for peace-of-mind is one of his best acting roles.

            WARLOCK
It stars Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn and Richard Widmark. And in it, Star Trek's Bones plays a pretty cool cow dude. Man, I've forgotten how great these guys were and to see them all together is really something. This one has been in my collection for awhile and strangely this is only...

            A Western Comeback ?????
            by George Bellefontaine
Kevin Costner is doing his part in trying to revive the Western with Open Range, He directs and co-satrs with Robert Duvall and Anette Benning. I have seen some scenes from this film and it looks like a winner. It has a gritty, realistic feel with characters that are human, and just happen to be in...

            Slow West
            by Ovation
At once classic and subversive in its treatment of Western themes. Surprisingly enough, New Zealand credibly stands in for 1870 Colorado. The acting is very strong and the cinematography is excellent. At 84 minutes, it's not burdened by extraneous material and its deliberate pacing does not rankle....

            Appaloosa... a western with substance

Ed Harris, along with his backup man and best friend, Viggo Mortensen, are peacekeepers for hire. After the Marshall of Appaloosa is gunned down by Bragg, a mean and dangerous local rancher ( Jeremy Irons ), the town fathers bring in Harris and Mortensen. The task of returning peace and justice to the...

            BITE THE BULLET
Stars Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, James Coburn and Jan Michael Vincent.

A newspaper sponsors a horse and rider race across a rugged landscape annually and offers a prize of $2000. Doesn't sound like much, but this is the turn of the century.
