With great anticipation of the restored wide screen video and DTS soundtrack, I bought "The Graduate -- 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition" DVD at Best Buy today (yikes -- has it really been that long since that movie was first released?), and was pleasantly surprised to find not just a "soundtrack" bonus CD of Simon and Garfunkel hits which had accompanied the movie in the package, but also a bonus DVD of "Simon and Garfunkel: Concert in Central Park". Hate to say it, but I think I enjoyed the "Concert" disc even more than the movie!
Great reunion concert from September 1981 -- basically a video of their "greatest hits", plus a few of Paul Simon's solo hits and a couple of nostalgic covers of songs by The Everly Brothers and Chuck Berry -- and the sound is pretty darned good for a production more than 25 years old. The audience was quite receptive (lots of cheers and applause) and attentive (the audience sounds did not interfere with the singing, but appropriately recognized and appreciated the performances).
The video is a tad blurry when projected 10 feet wide, but that night in New York's Central Park, I imagine many of the audience might have had blurry vision anyway. (Paul Simon made a remark that in addition to the NY Police Department and NY Fire Dept helping with the concert, a group not usually recognized for helping the city was giving half their proceeds from the evening to benefit the cause -- the guys selling loose joints.) :>)
If you're a Simon and Garfunkel fan and don't already have this either on CD or DVD, then run, don't walk, to pick up a copy. If you haven't been exposed to their music or just haven't paid it much attention, this would be a fine intro... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
