Beowulf and Grendel is something to behold

The film is based on an Anglo-Saxon poem about a great hero ( Beowulf) who goes to Daneland to help his friend King Hrothgor whose kingdom is being threatened by a killer troll ( Grendel ). But when the truth is known Beowulf realizes he has been drawn into something much more sinister than he had hoped for.

This is beautifully filmed and the stark Icelandic landscape can be breathtaking at times. In fact, the PQ is IMHO of reference quality. And the audio is no slouch either, with very deep LF effects. A very entertaining film for those who like this particular genre.

No, it is a new movie. I believe it was released in theaters last year.

David, the DVD is already available in Canada. (You can check out Amazon.ca to confirm that it is in stock and shipping.) It is just the insignificant market below the 49th parallel that can't get it until late September. :>)

Its good to hear that the movie was done well. I was wondering if they would do justice to one of the oldest stories(if not THE OLDEST) in the English language. Tolkein was influenced by the Beowulf story. So this is a must rent for me. -Russ

It is European made, Tex and apparently there was some funding and filming in Canada so maybe that's why it was available here before Stateside.

I was reading a piece on this film and the poem itself. Seems the actual author is unknown, but the most recent name associated with it was a catholic monk who didn't write it but was the translator. Very interesting.

I think I have to give this one a rent. As an English major, this was a must read in college and I studied it in Old English. The story was quit enjoyable. The true author is not known.

Thanks for the DVD update Sir George, I will check this out on Tuesday along with X-men if I am allowed to mix genres. I remember reading about Beowulf as a child in school and his heroic and legendary exploits.

                              Peace and blessings,

I must say I am mildly disapointed in this show with its PC revisionistic bent. The movie was okay but it just did not wow me. With the IB on it did make me jump a few times like at the water fall baptism. Cheers.

This film isn't for everyone, that's for sure. If you don't like the work of W. Somerset Maugham you probably won't like Being Julia because the movie is based on his 1937 novel " Theatre". For those who do like semi-classical literature, and can identify somewhat with what live theater is...

In answer to my own question, I would say between $10,000 and $40,000 dollars. It used to be more but digital has drastically lowered the cost while at the same time making it much easier to produce a professional look.

However, this isn’t a story about reasonable. This is the true...
