    Hollow Man Superbit

For a while now I've been kicking around the idea of picking up Hollow Man in Superbit as a video reference disk. Not long ago I saw several scenes from it on a professionally calibrated Sony FPJ (unfortunately I don't remember the model number) on a 100" or so screen at Bill Cushman's (the Widescreen Review writer) home. It was simply stunning. Period. It gave me a new appreciation of what a truly well-calibrated system with a high quality DVD can look like. Since then I've re-calibrated my Pioneer Elite RPTV with Digital Video Essentials and been very pleased with the results and wanted to check it against what I saw at Bill's that day.

To make a long story short, I went looking for the HM Superbit and had no luck at all at any of the B&M stores in the area. Best Buy has even flagged it as "deleted" in their computer inventory. I finally was able to get it through an online retailer. So if you are considering this DVD, you might want to get your copy fairly promptly - it may not be available later. This is just a personal observation ya'll. I don't have any firm info on it being OOP or anything.

The non-superbit version had a superior transfer so I passed up buying the Superbit when it was available.

George, one of the scenes that I'm using is when they are bringing the gorilla back from being invisible. There is a fluorescent blue-colored fluid they inject into the gorilla that just pops out of the screen at you, and it is rather hard to correctly duplicate that "screaming" blue tint.

That should come across in Superbit really well, too.

Maybe you should just wait for the Blu Ray version...

I'm finding myself going over the HD DVD releases planned Q4 '05, so that I don't buy any of those DVD's. There's a new SCE of "Star Trek: First Contact", for example, but that's supposed to be comign out on HD DVD.

OTOH, I don't think we'll be seing an HD DVD version of "Hollow Man"....

Me either, Jon. It's too bad that such a beautifully presented movie wasn't better in and of itself. :nonod:

                Hi David,

I was more making a joke becuase "Hollow Man" is from Sony, which means it would only be on Blu-Ray (format war, you know!). :W But I do agree that it was a little low on content compared with presentation quality and CGI.

Some gals are like that.... :B But I like them anyway!

One DVD that justifies buying a player -- Lawrence of Arabia SUPERBIT
                      by Burke Strickland
Lawrence of Arabia is one of the very best movies, possibly THE best, ever made. That’s not just my opinion, since it shows up on almost every “best” list by critics, directors, and fans. But it has always been special for me since first seeing it more than once during its initial “road show”...

If you are like me and always in search of that ultimate sound experience on your system, then you probably have bought the same DVD title more than once as soundtracks are upgraded through re-release. Superbit versions are one of those re-releases that without question sound (and look) much better...

Lot's of hype, lot's of expectations. Does Spider-Man make the transition from comic-book to the big screen? Oh yeah! Right up front, this movie rates :45: out of :5: Don't pass Go, don't collect $200 dollars, just go see this movie!

Francis Ford Coppola is a seriously "different" man. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, the image and sound of this DVD is flat outstanding vs. the original DVD. Excellent shadow detail - it'd
