    Harry Potter : POA

Anyone get any weird diagonal banding problems with all the dark scenes in H.P.?
Or is this a flaw of my LG7832?
I thought maybe my wife accidentally put the FM antennae on a stray cable in the back. Then, i tried to pause it and the diagonal banding halted and was still viewable (although perfectly frozen). So maybe its the pressing.

    weird.

    Thanks for any input.

    Leef,

Which Harry Potter (there are three films) and what chapter / scene are you seeing this in?

Geoff, I'm betting POA stands for Prisoner Of Azkaban.

              Hmmm.

              Ya something is up here.
i think i have to spend some time recalibrating my toshiba 50".
It starts right from the get go.
30-45 seconds in you see Harry in his bedroom and the wavy surges start.
If i look everywhere where its black, around Harry's head and bed, its there.

i took the DVD upstairs to the computer and tried it there.
              no waves.
Also, on the comp screen, the black levels (from the top and bottom of the letterboxed background) totally matched the movie's black levels.

I'm pretty sure it needs some calibrating.
              \

i'll chuck on DVE when i get some time and figure it out.
All the other reviewers who checked out the Disk all agree the video is good.
So the only anamolies must be on my system.

              I'll get it.
              Cheers,
              Mikey

                You seem to be right.

I watched the first 2/3's of the DVD tonight and didnt' notice anything. Then again, I don't have the best vision in the world, so I asked my 12 year old daughter if she noticed anything, to which she also said "no." Maybe someone with sharper vision will notice something, but I didn't.

By the way, I know views differed quite a bit on POA, but, to me, as in the theaters, it is my favorite of the Potters yet, although it probably strays from the book most as well.

To me it didn't stray from the book so much as pick and choose what it covered. Prisoner Of Azkaban is easily the most complex of the first three stories and translating the whole book to the screen would IMO take two full-length movies to do it full justice. I did enjoy POA, but to say I enjoyed it more than the first two would be difficult. I guess I'm just a Potterverse nut at heart. :T

The Potter books keep getting longer and longer, so condensing will be the name of the game, but I think an excellent job was done of it this time. My daughter was very upset at the theater when it changed things around, but when we watched it at home, and she had adapted to the changes, she too now really likes POA.

By the way, Leef, you might not have been off at all regarding your original problems with the PQ. I've read on other boards where people are experiencing similar problems and even numbers flashing on the screen, which they felt was a copy protection thing. It seems to be much more obvious with certain video component types though.

Ya, it looks like its time for a new display soon.
I'm at a LAN party now, and was doing some quick research. i believe the anamoly i was seeing might have something to do with the zenith/LG players and can be partially rectified by adjusting black levels.

on a better note, my wife and i were watching Harry the other night on the 50" when she said "we need a bigger TV"...
muhahaha. hey she said it, not me. :B

                        thanks for the help gang,

Sorry Mikey, no banding at all on mine. :nonod:

What beautiful video!!! It's as good as the first two IMO, and that's saying something. The shots of Harry and Buckbeak flying over the lake are absolutely breathtaking. Excellent audio as we've come to expect from these films, too. Couple all that with a good story, fine acting all around and yessir, it looks (pun intended) like another winner of a DVD!

                            :4: out of :5:

                              An Update.

Well its definitely not just my system.
And it's not interference like I originally surmised.
Looks like a whole bunch of folks saw the same thing i did over at HTF (the potter thread around page 4).
Reassuring to know that its not just me.
                              Sometimes, i second guess myself.
(Hey, was that a green light saber there?)

It's quite possible that ALL our TV's are out of whack with respect to Brightness and Contrast.
I'll try to calibrate tonight before smallville.

Watched it again lastnight, pq is superb, and the sound eclipsed that. The LFE was very potent, yet clean and tight. I actually feel like watching it again tonight, but a group of friends is waiting for me on Xbox Live to play some Ghost Recon 2.

                                go buy this dvd!!

                                  Solved.

Ya LFE is sweet in this.
I like the sountrack to all the harry movies so far so it's kinda nice to be able to showcase this one to buds who haven't seen it.

                                  -cut to the short-
as we suspected, the problem layed in various contrast/brightnes settings.
After taking back multiple beer cases to the store, i broke into a new case of moosehead and began tweaking while the wife was away preparing a santa float for the girl guides parade.
i knew what i was going to see before the first menu popped up.
my honey, in all her techonlogical marvelousness had reset the picture to a cold image an bumped all the values straight up.
When i put on the 'THX optimizer' from ROTJ, the backdrop shadow from the THX logo pretty much jumped out and had a beer with me.
I turned him down about 20 notches (he had his beer then left).
                                  Then ALL was good.
Harry was as he should be.
                                  No more wavy black tides.

I still have to ask "what technology was in that place to begin with, to initiate THAT BS?"
but maybe thats for another day.
For now, i'm a happy camper.
                                  MMMMmmm. Cold Moosehead.

                                  Cheers, have a great weekend,
