    $6M Man a comedy!

Carrey to tackle 'Six Million' role
    By JAM! Movies
You can add "Six Million Dollar Man" to the ever-growing list of popular 1970's TV shows heading to theatres.

Variety reports that Jim Carrey and "Old School" director Todd Phillips -- also director of the upcoming "Starsky & Hutch" film -- will team up next fall for the big-screen adaptation of "The Six Million Dollar Man."

Based on the Martin Caidin novel "Cyborg," the movie version of the Lee Majors TV drama has been in development for many years. Initially conceived as an action film, it was fast-tracked as a comedy once Carrey signed on to star.

Carrey's current box-office popularity was no doubt a factor in the decision. "Bruce Almighty," his last film, has made over $470 million in the worldwide box office.

"The teaming of Jim and Todd is the perfect creative combination to launch the franchise," said Dimension Films co-chairman Bob Weinstein. "Todd is a director with proven instincts, and Jim is a superstar."

Carrey's next project, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," will be in theatres in December

I see we as a society are running out of fresh new ideas.

Why all the remakes? Laziness I suppose. I noticed something while watching Chicago. Our imaginations used to be fueled by radio and newspapers and drawings and our ability to vocalize, and draw what was happening. Play by plays, radio theater etc...was as good as the speaker's ability. I think people had a better capacity for imagination and originality back then and it's starting to show with all the remakes.

Even the internet has a fast food contigency built-in with shorthands for everything we do (I'm guilty of it).

Rather than work on an original idea we throw as much out there as possible in what seems to be a full industry schedule and see where the chips fall. Other than LOTR, Pirates of the Carribean or Finding Nemo. I didn't see any movie with "legs". Each movie seemed to be judged on its opening night/weekend and then it got knocked out only to be replaced by the next big movie and so on.

The funny thing its that the studios are often saying "made x million on opening weekend, okay make another movie" They don't judge the true quality by watching what happened to the movie the following weekend.

Movies these days rely more on "hype" , good trailers ("hype"), good advertising ("hype"), cool toys ("hype") then a good story.

Often bad movies are patched with good hype. I don't run out to opening nights the way I used to...

Gordon, funny you should mention Chicago. I was watching a classic film channel of satellite, and saw an old movie from the 50's or so in black and white that was the original story. (wasn't titled Chicago, I can't remember what it was called) So even the story of Chicago, the play or movie, isn't original.

I found the Six Million Dollar Man tv series a little hard to take, so I think a comedy slant for the theatrical version is probably quite fitting. I may even rent the dvd when it comes out.

Don't get me wrong....If it wasn't that good to start with then by all means remake it....Like The Fly or The Thing.

Or if it hasn't been in a different format before than go ahead and try(TV -> Movie, Book ->Tv/Movie/Musical/Broadway and so on...)

The TV to Movie thing (more often than not) hasn't been that successful in the past (Charlie's Angels may have been a commercial success but I personally think it sucked and was designed for people with short attention spans My opinion of course...yeah yeah I know it was meant to be silly....but it was TOO silly...okay enough about that). Mission Impossible did really well, so, it can be done.

The problem with Jim Carrey is that as he gets older he is getting less funny and I think he is potentially a better serious actor but no one wants him to succeed there. Robin Williams took drama over the deep end (What Dreams May Come  , Jacob and the Liar) but is turning into a better creepy villain (1 Hour Photo, Insomnia).

Jim Carrey is talented (no two ways about that)...but this smells stinker no matter how you slice it. I think it could have been better done as an serious sci-fi action film (It just has more potential than as a spoof) but that just me :P

It's original in concept but it's mucking with a culty-status show (by turning it into a comedy).... I don't necessarily like that. What's next? Dallas the kung-fu action flic?

That about sums it up! 8)

I was one that grew up watching "The Six Million Dollar Man". I enjoyed the TV show. It was right up my sci-fi alley. Though I just cannot see it as a comedy. I wish they kept it as an action/sci-fi flick.

Hmmmm, maybe this will bring the old TV show to DVD! I can hope!!!

I personally enjoyed the TV show growing up. I even enjoyed watching The Bionic Woman. Doing a spoof of it should be a crime!! With today's technology and techniques that they use, they should be able to make a decent movie. But I guess the only people that would think along the same line is someone who was a fan of the show.

I had a brief exchange of emails with Todd Sutherland of Madrigal today about the future of the AVP. I asked Todd if it would be OK to copy our conversation to this group - he said sure. Note that he was still at work at nearly 8PM tonight (when I received his last response), so he's certainly a dedicated...

                    Mr. & Mrs. Smith--Hitchcock makes a comedy?!
                    by Ovation
Pulled another classic off the shelf last night. Hitchcock's only "straight comedy" (no murder, no mayhem), this stars the woman who defined "screwball comedienne"--Carole Lombard. Also starring Robert Montgomery, the story, style and comical moments are straight from the late 30s/early...

Hilarous bust a gut laugh outloud comedy. Very good for the entire family(even the kiddos). Nothing objectionable. No cuss words nothing.

The dvd is packed. It's mighty good.

                    Comedy Actor Leslie Nielsen, RIP
                    by Chris D
Very sad. Leslie Nielsen, famous comedy star of many slapstick movies like "Airplane" and "Naked Gun", has died. I didn't realize he was 84. Everybody has their niche in life, and he did slapstick like nobody else could in the world. Fantastic, fantastic, stuff.
