    Underworld - A Review

    Underworld - A Review September 22, 2003

    MPAA rating: R
    runtime: 121 minutes

Underworld is the tale of an alternate reality where we are in the latter stages of a millennium-long war between vampires and werewolves, played out in a city the vaguely resembles London. Directed by newcomer Len Wiseman, he shares writing credits with Danny McBride and Kevin Grevioux – a first-time writer with acting roles in this film as a werewolf and Charlie's Angels, Planet Of The Apes, Men In Black II. Underworld stars:
    1. Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor, Brokedown Palace, Serendipity, Haunted) as Selene
Scott Speedman (Can I Get A Witness?, Felicity (TV), Dark Blue) as Michael Corvin
Shane Brolly (Sin's Kitchen, Stealing Time, Deadly Swarm) as Kraven
Michael Sheen (Mary Rielly, Heartlands, The Four Feathers) as Lucian
Bill Nighy (Eye Of The Needle, Being Human, Guest House Paradiso) as Viktor

600 years before, the vampires had almost rid the world of werewolves with the death of the werewolf leader. But almost wasn't good enough and a few escaped - enough to keep the line alive, and enough to hound (sorry 'bout that one) the vampires to this day. Selene is a Death Dealer, a vampire warrior that has hunted the werewolves for centuries. With the current leader of her coven (Kraven) vainly expecting her to wed him, she sees the gradual decline of the coven into debauchery and sloth, and resents it. She stumbles across a team of 'wolves as they appear to be following a human (Corvin) down a rainy crowded sidewalk. She and another vampire follow along in an effort to find out what's going on. Let's just say that the mayhem doesn't take long to hop into high gear. And what magnificent mayhem it is! This is no steady-paced story – Blade meets the Matrix with both on speed should give you an idea of the breakneck pace at which this film moves. This is not a plot-driven film, so don't go in expecting deep, thought-provoking cinema. This is a roller coaster ride, plain and simple.

Visually this film is fabulous. It's the set in the darkest lighting conditions possible – even more so than Blade. The color palette consists almost entirely of blacks, grays, blues and silvers with some shots in subtle, gradual graduations of colors, and ranging to a couple that are almost monochromatic. It may sound boring, but I assure you, there are many beautifully framed and discretely colored scenes. Detail abounds in most shots with a few that are more softly focused. Special effects are just flat out marvelous. I was able to totally immerse in the story from the very start and wasn't pulled out of it at all by any lack of believability or poor CGI. Hmmm, did I mention that the world of vampires and werewolves is populated almost entirely by very handsome, very sexy, very athletic men and women? No? Well, it is.

Sonically, Underworld is a rip-snorting rollercoaster, too. Continuous and full-range use of the surrounds is the order of the day, with sterlingly clear vocals and deep deep bass. Moods are set by a very minimal musical track, unlike what was shown in the trailers - this is no MTV music video. Automatic weapons, swords, high-performance cars, and all the fighting, jumping, landing noises are convincing and well placed in the 360-degree soundstage. My highest praise for the soundtrack is that, once again, I was never pulled out of my immersion in the film by a discordant moment.

There didn't seem to be much in the way of advertising/hype for this film before it came out. But being a fan of action films, vampire/werewolves and Kate Beckinsale, I still had some seriously high hopes for this one. They were all met or exceeded! My only complaint with this oh-so-fun film (and it's a small one) is that with the headlong rush towards the conclusion, once you get there, you are left with a "oh, wait a moment" sensation as some of the storylines aren't resolved. Can you say sequel? Again, this is a small issue, and one that I'll gladly deal with, in hopes that the sequel is as entertaining as this first installment. FYI, the R rating is for strong violence and some language - there is no nudity or sexually explicit content. As a DVD, hopefully this will be a reference quality transfer. If it is, it should be "the" definitive test film for black-level definition.

So friends, put away the Monopoly board, don't pass Go, don't collect 200 dollars, just go straight to the theater and see this movie. If you are a fan of vampire, or werewolf, or just good old rock 'em sock 'em action films, beat your feet down to the local cinema and get aboard for the ride. You won't be disappointed.

    I give Underworld :4: out of :5:.

Underworld started out very well at the box office. It was the number one film on it's release weekend with ticket sales of $22.0 million in 2,915 theaters.

          Andrew, I've noticed that. :

I try to not read other reviews of movies that I'm going to see/review until after I've written mine, as I don't want someone else's thoughts shading my perceptions. Rotten Tomato is giving it only 5.1 out of 10 Average Rating. IMDB however is giving it a better 6.8 out of 10 User Rating. It seems as if I am definitely in the minority though, so it'll be interesting to hear all of your thoughts when you see it.
It's going on the "must buy" list for me. :tv:

I saw it twice this past weekend..I knew it would be goodm but not this good!

I love werewolf and vamp movies, this one is the mother of them all!

Movie of the Year for me thus far, no contest. Oh my goodness, is Kate hot when she's in Vamp mode and her eyes are Blue.

I saw it the 2nd time and started praying that the transfer to DVD is flawless...if it is...prepare to have a new Reference dvd! For picture and sound! 8)

Aaron, wasn't it great?!?!?!?! :T I'll be going back at some point this week for a second viewing, this time with Jen and the kids - they're a high school junior and college freshman so no problems with the violence.

Puh-lease Sony Pictures, gives us an uber-edition DVD of this movie! :^x

Dave, it's good to see someone feels the same about it as I!

Could you believe that it's budget was only 23 million? The special effects didn't hurt in any way, and everything else was so polished. I was stunned when I heard the budget was so low..but it only impressed me more to know that fact, then to realize what they pulled off with that small amount.

Acting was top notch in my book, for this type of film anyways. I should apologize for ranting, but I can't help it. I've been waiting for this movie for about 4 months...4 loooong months! And it exceeded my expectations!

The rest of your family will love it Here's to a great "family night out" !

Aaron, well 2/3 did anyway. My son and daughter both liked it a lot. My wife however. . . .

After a second viewing (in a different theater), my review doesn't require any changes. I still think this is an excellent twist on the vampire/werewolf genres and with the 4 un-resolved threads I counted, a sequel should be in the works.

The 4 questions I saw are: SPOILERS!
                  1. 1) Will Selene and Michael get together?

                    2) Kraven is still on the loose.

                    3) Will the blood from the Lycan's body spilling into the chamber holding Marcus, the remaining vampire elder, turn him into a mutant or just revive him?

                    4) How seriously will the covens go after Selene for killing Viktor?

David..glad to see almost everyone liked it!

#3..His eyes turned black when the blood dripped into his chamber.

Only ONE other persons eyes did that...I think you know who. There in lies the answer

Did you hear about the company saying this might have been only the first of a Trilogy!?!? Either the 2nd or 3rd one will be a prequel. That should be interesting indeed!

Aaron, hope you don't mind but, I put spoiler tags around your reply. Good catch on that, BTW. I saw it but didn't make the connection.

No, I wasn't aware of any talk of a trilogy. Hehe, excellent. :T

Heres the blurb about the future Underworld films..

                        http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=1666

Underworld is set to become a trilogy for Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems. Screen Gems has made a deal for Danny McBride and Len Wiseman to write a sequel to the vampire and werewolf thriller, which Wiseman has said he would again direct.

Screen Gems and Lakeshore hope to put the second film into production as soon as possible. A third film, a prequel, could follow. No deal is in place for star Kate Beckinsale, though she has expressed interest in reprising her part.

The first film earned $21.8 million last weekend, Screen Gems' best opening for a film ever.

I'll start off by saying that I was let down slightly.
Too many great ideas and they tried to get them all down in one movie.

It has amazing elements, I even enjoyed the throwback to practical effects style ala American Werewolf in London. The monsters were something tangible not a CGI effect like 99% of what's out there. So THUMBS WAY UP FOR THAT! Sure there was CGI but it didn't intrude. There was something missing from this movie...not sure exactly what but something (I was hoping for a tighter story this one ran away from them a bit).

                            Beckinsale was yummy.
Speedman was fine...not half as bad as people say he is.
Shane Brolly ("Kraven") Ye Gads this guy was awful...he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. About as much range as a piece of wood...not even drift wood but more like dead wood...unfortunately I guess he'll be back for part deux.

Everyone else was okay. Visually this is going to test even most complex systems. I hope your contrast is up to snuff because this movie is dark...really dark with shades of grey and that's about it. It takes place soley at night. I don't think I remember one daylight scene (except for a flashback).

Sonically this is amazing...and amazingly LOUD. Get ready to rock your ears off.

The concept is good (David's already given the crux of the story). I really liked the back stories, it's just that they didn't hold the present day story together very well. As a matter of fact, the movie I'd prefer to see is the one they allude to that started the feud in the first place.

This has too many blade meets dark city meets the matrix elements and unfortunately doesn't have enough meat to be original (those movies did it first so ,at best, this is a homage). Like I said, the concept is solid, it was the execution that let me down.
Does it move with a blistering pace?...you bet and that works with this movie.
Does it have repeat value? yes and no.
It's visually and sonically so unreal (good) that it's going to be great as a demo disc, but it is an akward beginning to what is to be a trilogy. I'm hoping for a more solid (read tighter) story next time. If the other 2 were really good then I'd pick it up to complete the set (think Lost World...it's got some really good moments (like the dangling off the cliff scene) but on the whole it's a failed movie)

                            NOW for my gripes:

I'm sick and tired of the sliding body parts gag (Vicktor's head sliding off). It's been done to death MOVE ON (Resident Evil, Ghost Ship, Final Destination2).

What's up with the de-powering the vampires??? Without their weapons, they are pretty useless against a full blown werewolf. That was majorly dissapointing to see. Vampires are supposed to be fast, powerful, sensual. These guys were WAY too goth but I guess that's the look of a modern day vampire  .

What was up with the hybrid?...he wasn't that interesting. I thought that it lacked vision (maybe they ran out of money so give him fangs, paint him black and run with it. They didn't really expand on what he could do...what are the advantages? Because they didn't really show them off, other than he moved really fast. What are the complications of being part vamp, part wolf? He almost got his ass kicked by Vicktor and Kate had to help him out. If things turn out they way they suggest, the next dude (Marcus) should be near unstoppable since the leaders are WAY stronger than their vampire family members (ie: snapping the neck of the werewolf).

The virus/genetic thing has been done to death. Let's return to the vampires of old who were demon immortals with powers: The ability to become the elements (mist), animals (bats wolves). Something more like Coppola's Dracula.

Also where did all the British vampires come from. You'd think that none of them had European origins based on how old they were. Come on folks, get back to the roots of folklore.

Blade has the weapons, be creative, put your heads together and come up with something new other than automatic handguns.

Maybe there's hope for Van Helsing!

                            B-

If I looked that deep into movies, I'd walk away feeling let down too. LOL!

But, as it may, I go to the theatre very seldom, and when I do, it's for a movie that I've been waiting for.

I read your gripes and I actually started thinking about them, and then I stopped. I don't want anything ruining what I think was/is a fantastic movie. If they wanted to explain everything, the already 2 hour movie would have been 6.

I thought what they did explain was adequate enough. Vamps, regardless of age or wisdom or strenght, cannot take on a werewolf hand to hand. I thought this was a given, and I was glad to see they didnt show some dude with fangs just throw a Lycan around, as that would have been very cheesy indeed.

Other then Viktor killing that one Lycan, the only other thing I thought was odd was the Viktors head being sliced and falling off. Just didn't fit.

In the end, I've seen it 3 times and will go again. I picked up on a LOT more the 2nd time. The 3rd time was to see Kate 8)

You do bring up valid points, but Like I said, I just can't look into a movie that deep or I won't like anything.

That was deep.??? Nah, it was a pretty superficial list. I just enjoy these type of movies and I was dissapointed that the concept didn't fully live up to my expectations because they have a really really cool concept.

No need to defend it. I understand you enjoyed it immensely. I was just giving the other side of the fence. What ya gonna do

I hope I didn't come off too defensive, and If I offended you in any way by saying you look too deep into it, that was not what I intended and I apologize.

To be very honest, I didn't expect a plot whatsoever. I love vamps and werewolves, and Kate ofcourse, so I wen't in expecting action, battles, transformations, and so on...

So about an hour into the movie, I was pleased to see they gave it a few twists and actually had good actors, except for Kraven, the biggest wuss of them all.

I never have high hopes for movies, I simply will not allow myself too. I used to walk away from movies feeling letdown. I have stopped doing this and I find myself enjoying movies much much more.

It's the same as home theatre gear for me. I got to a point where I stopped being so critical and I find myself just enjoying what I'm hearing/seeing.

                                  Happy Listening!

No there was no offence taken...it's all in good fun. I'm glad you liked it. I'll be back for part 2 I'm sure. It's too unresolved to not want to see what happens next.

I hope this one lives up to expectations. Kate Beckinsale is Selene, a ferocious vampire soldier in a war between vampires and werewolves, that just so happens to be in love with one of the werewolves. The trailers look good - something of a combination of The Matrix and Blade. This...

Looks like it might be pretty dark and cool. I'm hoping for better than Resident Evil which was a bit of a mess in my opinion.

I just hope they can avoid using the music...

Just got finished watching this movie on DVD. I never saw it in the movies but from what everyone had told me it was a very good movie. So when I went into a local dealer on Saturday, low and behold their it was 10days early. See here is my review of the movie.

Verrrryyyy interesting, but not very scary. Flick is about a war between vampires and werewolves. Lots of action and extremely loud soundtrack. Had to turn volume down by 5 clicks. I rented and don't think I will bother to buy. This is a one time watcher for me.

Has anyone seen the trailer for this movie yet? I like the premise of vampires vs. werewolves. Like in most case except really exceptional ones like LOTR, or when someone treats me, I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD.
