    A Western Comeback ?????

Kevin Costner is doing his part in trying to revive the Western with Open Range, He directs and co-satrs with Robert Duvall and Anette Benning. I have seen some scenes from this film and it looks like a winner. It has a gritty, realistic feel with characters that are human, and just happen to be in the west.

I love Westerns, and though he has taken some hard critical knocks with his recent work, I am a diehard Costner fan. I hope this new film of his knocks the critics for a loop.

George, if I can't get in Friday night, I'll be at the theater Saturday morning. It does look like a winner from the trailers. Yeehaw!

Well, it got two thumbs up from Ebert and Roper, with Roper calling it perhaps the best Western since The Unforgiven and Ebert saying that Duvall's performance is worthy of an Oscar nomination. Have to say that I love Duvall in most anything and that one of my favorite Westerns was Lonesome Dove, so, even though I don't go to the theaters much, I might go see this.

      I live for good Westerns.

That's all good news fellas. You know, I too might just get out to see this one, rather than wait for the dvd. But regardless, the dvd will end up in my collection. I can never get enough of Westerns. And there are still so many good oldtimers out there that have yet to be released on dvd.

Tex, I hope you can find time to do one of your great reviews of Open Range.

OPEN RANGE - the Western is alive and kicking
            by George Bellefontaine
Tex Meek already did an excellent review on this film over at AT THE MOVIES and he nailed it. So I won't go into story detail and what-not, but I have a few observations I would like to impart.

First of all, this is not a knock-down-drag-'em-out kinda Western. In fact this story could...

Seraphim Falls... a western you may have missed
            by George Bellefontaine
Seraphim Falls is a taut psychological western drama set just after the civil war. It stars Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan. Neeson, from the opening, is dead set on hunting down Brosnan and killing him. We don't find out why until a brief flashback to a place called Seraphim Falls. This film has gorgeous...
