OPEN RANGE - the Western is alive and kicking

Tex Meek already did an excellent review on this film over at AT THE MOVIES and he nailed it. So I won't go into story detail and what-not, but I have a few observations I would like to impart.

First of all, this is not a knock-down-drag-'em-out kinda Western. In fact this story could be set anywhere, anytime; the circumstances would just be different. That's because this is a story about people, their good, their bad, their weaknesses and their strengths. And like Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN, the pace is deliberately slow to allow the viewer the opportunity to soak up atmosphere and emotion as we get to learn what makes these characters tick.

The cinematography took my breath away at times. And the sound won't rock your system, but it will be very realistic right from the sounds of the wild, the thunder and rain, and during the gunbattle. And though the gunfight seemed confusing at times, I'm sure that this is exactly how gunfights really were in the 1800s. During the gunbattle, the sounds of the handguns, rifles and shotguns are distinctly different in not only their sound, but in the effect they have when someone is hit. Music was only used at the very end of the battle, and this I felt added tremendously to the realism of it all.

Costner takes a lot of heat from critics and the viewing population in general. I guess you either love him or hate him. I happen to be one who loves his work. I feel he is a much better actor than he is given credit for. But in the case of OPEN RANGE, the top stars go to Robert Duvall as Boss. Still, Cosner's take on Charlie, a man to whom killing comes easy, though is is both haunted and ashamed of his past, was excellent in my view. And Annette Benning is perfect as the woman who has lived a loveless life for too many years. All of these main characters are aging and changing, and it is all brought off extremely well and in a believable manner.

I loved this film and will watch it often. They don't make many Westerns anymore, but thanks to Eastwood and Costner, the Western is alive and kicking. And the good news is, apparently Costner is thinking of doing another one. I for one can't wait.

    :5:

BTW: This film was released here on Tuesday January 20th on dvd. Walmart had two full rows of Open Range on display. By Saturday there was only 1 copy left and I grabbed it. If Walmart sold out in a small community like this, I can well imagine how well sales are going all over North America.

        THE EXTRAS

I watched disc 2 last night. Man Kevin really had a difficult time getting this film made. But most interesting for me was how wrapped up he gets when making the film. And during the making he was suffering from appendicitis, though he didn't realize why he was feeling so lousy until after the film was completed. I don't watch many extras, but I just had to see this one.

I gotta have this DVD... I may go to wally world and pick it up today. (Hope they'll have it.)

I really like Costner, Duvall and Benning and I like westerns.

We have the LD of Wyatt Earp which we really liked and another movie Costner starred in that was kinda semi-western was Revenge.

Of course just about anything Costner stars in I like.

Heh, Sonnie you and I must be two of the dozen or so people out there that liked Wyatt Earp. Costner had another little western that I liked. Dances With Wolves, I think it was called. . . . :B

Yes... I forgot about Dances With Wolves... that is a good one... I didn't like it as well as Wyatt Earp but I liked it.

I wish they would release Wyatt Earp on DVD... it would be in my collection for sure.

Add me to that list of Wyatt Earp lovers. I have it on LD and will be quick to replace it with the dvd if they ever get around to it.

Dances With Wolves ??? Oh, yeah, I kinda like that one as well.

                And don't forget SILVERADO !!!

No way George, I'm not forgetting Silverado. Hehe, I was lucky enough to pick up one of the 1.85:1 formatted early versions of the DVD and not the vertically cropped 2.35:1 they released shortly after.

I have the 1.85:1 version of Silverado as well, and since it's such a scenic picture, filmed open-matte, and HD mastered/16:9 enhanced, I decided to hold onto that early-transfer DVD "mistake" version of the movie.

I just saw Open Range on a recent plane filght and I thought that it was a pretty good film. One of Costner's better movies. Of course Robert Duvall and Annette Benning helped a lot with their very good character portrayals.

I'm not sure if I'll go so far as to buy the DVD (unless I find it cheap on sale), but I did enjoy watching the film. 8)

                      Re: Silverado

I never replaced the 1:85 either, even though I am a stickler for OAR. I felt the open matte framing was just fine.

Excellent western movie indeed with a good storyline. We finally watched it last weekend.

Beautiful country side shots in this movie.

I think those were the loudest and heaviest bullets I've ever heard. Those bullets were pickin' folks off the floor and tossing them across the room. I wouldn't wanna be in the way of one.

Those "tossing them around" shots were a double-barrelled 12 guage shotgun. 8O Ouch.

Sonnie, I'm not sure. From comments in the movie, I'd date its timeline around 1880-1885. The best I've been able to come up with is a notation on Winchester's site that shows them introducing a rival "shotshell" in multiple guages - including a 10-guage - back in 1886. An English company - Moore, I believe - had a 10-guage model available in the later part of the 1800s. It could have been a 10-guage, but I'll stick with 12-guage for now.

Just watched Open Range because I heard about it here at HT Guide. The shootout was the most satisfying part of the movie, I just love seeing bad guy's get killed. It wasn't a gore fest either, thank goodness. It's OK in a good movie to get 20 shots out of a six shooter, especially when the bad guy's get blasted..... :2guns: :thud:

For me number one was HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, with WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE a close second. The actors ( Richard Boone and Steve McQueen, respectively) made them hits for me. There were a lot of other good ones I enjoyed, but I never missed an episode of the above two show.
