    AFI's 100 heros and villians.... ?

Didn't have to much problem with the villian list, but thought Rick from Casablanca should have been #1 and Will Kane from High Noon #2.

What did you think of the list ?

As much as I like "Casablanca", I'll have to agree with AFI that Atticus Finch is a fitting hero, deserving to be at the top of any such list. I'm surprised that the character from "To Kill A mockingbird" was number one, given the far greater general popularity of some of the other films listed, but for decency, nobility under duress and suitability as a role model, I can't think of anyone who fills the role better -- not even Rick Blaine (4) or Will Kane (5), deserving as they are for inclusion on the list. I do think Blaine and Kane have "real life" characteristics that should have pushed them ahead of Indiana Jones and James Bond, but in the world of "action/adventure" those two deserve be toward the top of any heroes list as well.

I was glad to see Ripley and T.E. Lawrence in the top ten -- "Aliens" has long been a favorite which I have felt has gotten less-than-deserved recognition over the years, and "Lawrence of Arabia" (LoA) may well be the finest motion picture ever made, and the character, based on a real life figure, is complex and deep, not a stereotypical "good guy", but a hero nevertheless. (BTW, I just rewatched LoA last night.)

I watch LoA at least once a year. I'd watch it more often but it is sooooo long.

        Overall, I like the list.

Really happy to see included in heroes: Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, Charlie Chaplin in City Lights

Really happy to see included in villains: Hal in 2001 and Robert Mitchum's character in Night of the Hunter.

I know it's all subjective, but, for me personally, I'd put people like Henry Fonda in there more (example: The Defiant Ones) and isn't John Wayne the all time American hero (example: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence)? For that matter, Lee Marvin in that same movie seems a lot nastier to me than the witch in The Wizard of Oz. I also find characters such as Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire or Gene Hackman in The Unforgiven to be much more villain like than some on the list, but it's just a matter of my taste I guess.

Anyway, lists like these are fun because we all have our own picks. Like, for instance, in Pokeman 3, there was this one guy who...

Oops, I do see Mr. Fonda is included for 12 Angry Men. I missed it the first time around. ops:

I didn't miss John Wayne in True Grit the first time. Isn't that the one he was given the academy award for? It's just that, in my opinion, he acted better and was more heroic in a few other pics and that one or two of those should have been included.

AFI put together a good list here.

Atticus Finch made a lasting impression on me at an early age. I think my first real inkling of what respect is came from the scene in the courtroom as Atticus is leaving after the decision and Reverend Sykes says to Atticus' daughter: "Jean Louise. Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing." I STILL get goose-bumps from that one. . . .

One thing I would change on the villains' list is to put Frank (Henry Fonda) from Once Upon A Time In The West in there. Truly a chilling performance.

I thought about Henry Fonda in that same role, but didn't mention it because it's been so long since I've seen it. They keep on saying it's right around the corner on DVD, but have had logistical problems in getting the full 3+ hours together thus far. It is one of the DVD's I'm most desparate to own.

As far as Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird, his role in that film is how I'd define being a real man, honorable, dignified, doing what you feel must be done without complaint, standing up for right, and carrying on despite the odds. I'm really happy it was chosen number one in heroes.
