What Sci-fi Books Would You Like To See Made Into A Movie?

What would be your choices for the best hard science fiction books to be made into movies? Now, I mean REALLY GOOD movies, or series of movies like Fellowship Of The Ring, not cheapo imitations like Starship Troopers! Here's my list:

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
    Mindbridge by Joe Haldeman
The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes
The Mote In God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
The Pliocene Exile Trilogy by Julian May
Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov

Yeah -- what they did with Starship Troopers really "bugged" me. :>) I'll second the motion for high quality adaptations of "Childhood's End" (which immediately came to mind just reading the thread's title) and "Foundation Trilogy" -- those are books I thought would make great movies when I first read them in high school. A few years ago, there were rumors afloat that "Childhood's End" was even slated for production -- turned out to be an indie (aka "low budget") sex comedy. Not quite the same thing... :>)

Another science fiction work that could make a great movie was a short story published in Analog in the late 1960s -- "Monument".

I would love to see the Foundation Series made into a movie. How about some of the Robot stories?

A personal favourite of mine is the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny. This was really my first foray into the fantasy genre, so that might negate it from this Sci-fi thread.

            Paul,

Yeah, I was sort of excluding fantasy with the comment about hard sci-fi. That's another thread! FWIW, the Amber series will be right at the top of my fantasy list.

              Starship Troopers Discussion
              by Chris D
Sorry if this gets David or anyone else going. I just think it's a worthwhile discussion!

As posted in the upcoming releases thread, Starship Troopers is about to be released in Superbit edition. I love this movie and will most likely buy this one too. The problem is, this is the third...

Movie versions of books (or vice versa)
              by Chris D
This may be a good discussion. The topic is popular books that have been made into movies. By and large, my personal opinion is that movie renditions of good books fall far short for a few reasons. First, I think due to the media of print, books allow for a much more thorough immersion of the reader...

              Have You Read The Book?
              by David Meek
In another post about Lord Of The Rings I mentioned how the images in the film matched the mental pictures I had formed many years earlier while reading the trilogy, and The Hobbit for the first time. This added greatly to my enjoyment of the movie as it gave me a feeling of immersion in this story...
