    In The Theaters.... 2002/02/01

Hmmm, some good choices in the theaters right now. My personal "wanna see it" list is:

    Blackhawk Down
    The Count Of Monte Cristo
    Lantana
    Birthday Girl
    The Royal Tenenbaums

As a busy weekend is planned for the Meek household, I'll most likely get to just one of the above.

What's out there that looks interesting to you?

    I still have to see:

    The Lord of the Rings
    Harry Potter
    BlackHawk Down

The only other movie that looks interesting is The Count of Monte Cristo. Though I fear I've seen the ending from the trailers.

      Paul,

Oh man, Lord Of The Rings is awesome in my book! It immediately jumped into my Top 20 list. I can't wait for the DVD.

Harry Potter stands up pretty well on its own, but if you like the books, you'll VERY likely enjoy the movie.

I hope Blackhawk Down is as good as advertised. I haven't read Mark Bowden's book yet, but hopefully the movie treats the subject with the respect it should. Being a Ridley Scott film I do have high hopes.

Blackhawk Down is the kind of movie that just might persuade me to give the local cinema another try.

Saw the Royal Tenebaums last weekend- it was a good dark comedy. Even though my ladyfriend doesn't usually like those kinds of movies, she enjoyed- very good ensemble acting, and some very funny bits. But not quite what some people consider mainstream.

          Regards,

I agree that Lord Of The Rings -- Fellowship Of The Rings (LOTR - FOTR) is a great movie. I want to see it again soon in the commercial theater (and considering how seldom I ever go there, that is saying a lot) and will definately buy the DVD. The prospects for the sequels are very good-to-excellent since all three were all filmed at the same time (insuring the same cast, sets, costumes, etcetera would be available). This "first-of-three" is SO far better than another "first-of-three" ("prequels" to familiar and acclaimed 4,5 and 6) :>) which has had a lot of people in a spin during the last year, that they are not even in the same galaxy. :>)

LOTR-FOTR is well worth the time and the price of admission. (That other one wasn't even worth sitting through the first time, although I did, just once.) My first impulse was to give LOTR-FOTR five stars and proclaim it one of the best movies ever. But I think I should at least see it a second time before putting it in the vaunted ranks with other movies that have stood the test of time. (Ones that I have seen and continued to enjoy half a dozen times or more over the period of several years if not decades.) :>) So I give it a provisional 4 1/2 stars. (The provision being that it really is a five star flick for production values, writing, acting, etcetera, but it just hasn't been around long enough to proclaim it as a top movie of all time.) Call back in twenty years. :>) Of course, if the whole series is as good as the first installment, you won't have to wait that long for us to "know for sure". ) :>)

Well folks, I didn't make it to a single movie this weekend and as I type this, it's the end of the 3rd quarter and the Rams are getting pounded in Naw'leans. But, never fear, I will take tomorrow off and catch Blackhawk Down at the matinee showing! How's that for dedication?

Blackhawk Down - From One Of The Pilots!
                  by David Meek
Hi all. I ran across this post and thought it would be a nice addition to the review thread on Black Hawk Down posted earlier. Gerry Izzo, was a pilot of one of the surviving Black Hawks and this is his take on the film, with lots of info on the actual battle.

Blackhawk Down - R1 DVD Rumor!

Rumor-mongering here, but on two other forums and also in the January Widescreen Review it's going around that Columbia Studios officials say that they plan to release Special Edition DVDs similar the Superbit DVDs released by Sony, and Blackhawk Down will be the pilot or at least one of the first!...

Before I get to the "review" of this film, seeing it has brought up a thought that I'd like to share with you. First off, this movie isn't for everyone - but I think most everyone, adults at least - should see it just once. . .

                  What do movie theaters/cinemas use?
                  by rotel&energy
I always wondered what kind of gear movie theaters and cinemas use. I'm assuming they have multiple channels with many more speakers and much more power than a home theater setup. Does anyone know any specifics on what gets installed in movie theaters or how they do surround sound, amps, etc. in theaters?...

Are movie theaters safe for newborns?
                  by Andrew Pratt
My daughter is only 6 weeks old and I'm wondering if movie theaters are a danger to her hearing? This could be movies in a commercial theatre or at home in my basement theatre. Obviously loud noises are a concern for us all but are newborns more susceptible to damage even at lower volumes? I've tried...
