Requiem for the American Dream (2016)

This is a documentary by Noam Chomsky who is an 87 year old American philosopher and political activist. It discusses the impact of concentrating wealth in the hands of a small number of people in America, which he argues has resulted in the decline of the middle classes and the erosion of democracy.

I learnt more about the issues facing present-day America in 75 minutes watching this film than over the past 75 weeks listening to the weasel words coming out of the mouths of Donald and Hillary.

The film is currently in theatres and will be available on DVD on August 2, 2016.

    Nigel.

LOL - just in time for the US election, what a coincidence! Sounds interesting, and I'm sure I'll watch it on DVD or TV eventually. I'm always up for listening to various viewpoints. I don't think I could say I've agreed with a lot of Chomsky in the past.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

This is a World War II film about an army medic who wants to serve his country by joining the military but refuses to pick up a gun. Although ostracised by nearly everyone around him he eventually distinguishes himself through great bravery during the Battle of Okinawa.

Eat That Question - Frank Zappa in His Own Words (2016)

I watched this movie last night and it was time well spent – interesting and informative. You don't need to be a fan of Frank Zappa's music to appreciate the man. I have never enjoyed his avant-garde work, and I don’t think that’s going to change. His 1970s rock music is what appeals to me,...

      La La Land (2016)

What a lovely movie. I saw it with my wife and daughter, and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. It certainly exceeded my expectations. I had previously wondered whether all the fuss was a case of Hollywood loving Los Angeles. Not so. I’m not a big fan of musicals but the quality of the music won me...
