    Golden Compass

This is a good interesting movie for kids and most adults. It has a very interesting plot and story with very good special effects. I think it is from a series of three books, so if it is successful teh sequels will follow.

    Dave-

I saw a news report that the story and its sequels push a subtle atheistic agenda. Did you find that to be true at all in the story?

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

That is a somewhat simplistic critique of the books and (according to Roger Ebert's review) not a relevant point in the film. The books are not "subtly atheistic", actually, but rather a critique of organized religions (particularly the Catholic Church, IIRC) and include as a plot element the idea that God is an ancient entity who is dying or has died (I can't immediately recall the details as the books came out in the mid nineties). (the spoiler is for the books, not the film, BTW) The film is fantasy/sci-fi that should not be particularly offensive to any particular religion--at least, not any more so than many other fantasy/sci-fi stories. But, as often happens, criticisms of the source material often obscures the actual film.

Yeah, seems the catholic church in some places is banning the film for its church members, but my understanding from those who have seen the film say there is nothing there to be concerned about.

I did not pick up on any atheistic agenda in the film. There is criticism of the rulers of the land who seem to want complete control over everything, but that theme is in a lot of movies. It may be there, but it is subtle.

I will start shortening things up here. And just get to the salient points. But first, let me say this. Up to this point Heavens Gate was the biggest disaster in the history of filmmaking, at least from the perspective of the investors. At $40 million dollars it bankrupted UA studios. Books have been...

Movie versions of books (or vice versa)
            by Chris D
This may be a good discussion. The topic is popular books that have been made into movies. By and large, my personal opinion is that movie renditions of good books fall far short for a few reasons. First, I think due to the media of print, books allow for a much more thorough immersion of the reader...

            Ender's Game coming to film
            by Chris D
They darn well better do this one right. Orson Scott Card's masterpiece (and I DON'T use that word lightly) is coming to the big screen, this November. Like many literary and sci-fi afficianados, Ender's Game is one of my all-time favorite books. And as I always say, while great works of film, music,...

It's a book entitled IN HARM'S WAY. Yes, I know there was a film called IN HARM'S WAY starring the Duke, but this book is about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Remember Quint talking about this in Jaws? Well the book is something else and I am far from finished reading it. But it's one of those...

I don't know how many youngsters actually saw this flick but they must have had a hard time trying to follow the plot. The fog begins to clear as the film moves along, but most youngsters probably gave up trying to figure things out and just sat back and watched in awe-struck wonder as some of those...
