The ones that really stick out to me are:

Underworld Evolution (oooooh, this should be GOOD)
Annapolis (what's this one about, the Naval Academy?)
The Pink Panther (did I just see an ad for this, starring Steve Martin? Hmmm... as much as I like Steve, I'm hesitant to try to replace the great Peter Sellers)
The Benchwarmers (cool, a story about my high school sports days)
X-Men 3 (hope this one doesn't turn out to be a dud... isn't it by a new director or something?)
Cars (I hope the Pixar home runs continue!)
    CHRIS

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

David, why, is Pink Panther not really coming out?

Chris, Annapolis is about the naval academy.

Tex, The Hills Have Eyes remake should be interesting, providing they don't screw it up.

Sorry 'bout the confusion on The Pink Panther. It's scheduled for wide release Feb. 10th. I shouldn't try to do things at 1:00 AM. Yes Chris, that's the one with Steve Martin, Jean Reno, Kevin Kline and Beyonce Knowles.

George, it could be but I'm not hopeful. From the clips I've seen it looks like another formulaic slasher flick.

I hope they add the song 'Cars' to the movie Cars. That would be cool. I love that song. lol

Final Destination 3? Scary Movie 4? Come on, the last one's weren't that good at all. They should know when to stop. Next thing you know, we have the Police Academy's of the 2000s.

I'm looking forward to X-Men 3 and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Remember, I'm on an island. With a single-screen theater. That shows one film a week, once an evening Friday through Monday. This makes for delays in working down the queue for newly-released movies.

You'd think it would at least be a multiplex with four or five screens. What's the population, Tex ?

It's a remake. It's almost a "given" they'll screw it up. On the other hand, if you are into gratuitous violence, I've heard the remake is a masterpiece. :>)

I visit relatives in a small town in west Texas with a population of about 14,000 and they have a six screen cinema. But their market area covers a fairly large territory -- people come from a lot of other towns a good distance away that don't have such a facility. Fortunately Texas has a pretty good highway system even in rural areas which facilitates that kind of travel.

The island locale makes all the difference. Unless Oracle Island is in archipelago of islands inhabited by avid movie goers willing to use their boats to get there, it would be unlikely that a movie house with multiple screens could be sustained by the local population.

                                    Burke

At 4800 I can see why there is only one bijou. The town I live in has a population of 9,000 but it is surrounded by 4 smaller towns making a total pop of about 25,000. But I'd guess the theater is quite busy in the summer on your island, Tex.

July 28th is the release of Miami Vice. Fond memories of the series. . . .

Really, they're making a Miami Vice movie? Who's starring in this one? I remember thinking that the theme song was just the coolest thing ever, as a kid.

                                            Chris,

Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx play Sonnie Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Michael Mann is directing. Does this title have possibilities? I think so.

With Mann directing, I don't see how we can go wrong.

Just watched a preview for Poseidon. Why did this need remaking? And why did Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss want in?

Good question. Seems Hollywood is having a hard time finding good original material these days, so back to the remakes. As for Dreyfus, after Jaws, I thought he'd never make another film with an ocean setting. As for Kurt, well he's just a hardworking actor, but I wish he had spent his time here on something else. The only thing that will make the remake better will be the cgi, I'm guessing.

IMHO, it’s all about the Benjamin’s..........
Remakes are cheaper to produce, don’t have to pay the original author; don’t need the super talented writers for the screenplay, etc. And today, it seems the Baby Boomers flock like cattle to any remake that is on topic to something from their past, whether it be a TV show, movie, book or what ever.

I think Hollywood is more than capable of making high quality films, but the budgets are so outrageous, no one is willing to take the risk that the general movie-going population is going want to see films like that. Meanwhile, remakes and sequels are almost guaranteed to break even on $200 -$300 million dollar budgets in the first weeks of release, not counting DVD sales which can is some cases generate more revenue than ticket sales.

The cost and related risks of today’s Hollywood movies just don’t allow for anything other than the mass market/marketing dribble that has flooded the theaters today, and in fact, the phenomena has made Broadway and live theater a luxury only the very few ‘well-to-do’ can afford today.

Sadly, both these forms of entertainment were once and originally the entertainment for, of and by the conman populace. I wonder what Shakespeare, Moliere, Wells and Huston would have to say?
