    Movies that affected your life

    Two in my case.

First was SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO ( 1952). I was 16 when I saw it. Gregory Peck played a writer who lay dying at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the film was a series of flashbacks depicting the life he lived. I loved the story, and when I learned it was based on a story by Ernest Hemingway, I read everything I could get my hands on that he wrote. Literature had always been a favorite subject of my in school, and now, after reading Hemingway I suddenly found myself wanting to be a writer. As a result I started studying all forms of the written word. I worked at a drugstore after school and used my extra money to buy an old typewriter, Soon I was writing fiction stories and sending them off to various magazines. I sold my first short story in 1967 ( after a thousand or so rejections) and my last one in 1975. By then I had made it to the executive level in publishing and workdays got longer and longer, leaving me exhausted at the end of the day, and little time to write. Besides, you couldn't raise a family on the litle bit of money I got paid for short stories, so it just made sense to give it up.

The second film that affected my life was FROM HERE TO ETERNITY( 1953).Montgomery Clift's character played the horn. There's a scene where he is out with the guys, grabs the bugle from one of the guys and plays Chattanooga Choo Choo along with the band. That scene stayed with me for days. I loved music as long as I can remember, and had recently bought a stereo record player. My next purchase was a used trumpet. I took some lessons at the local conservatory, as well as some extra lessons from a professional band trumpet player and before long I was playing for money. But, like writing, my career in publishing was too demanding and I slowly drifted away from the paying gigs, which really wasn't a lot in those days.

So how about you ? Any movies make a change in your life ?

Hiya George. Sorry, I've been REALLY busy. As much as I love movies (and their effect on me), I don't have one that deeply changed my life. The two films that did influence me the most in that respect have to be Le Mans, which stirred an interest in high-performance cars that goes on to this day, and To Kill A Mockingbird which first caused me to think about justice and injustice as it applies to everyone.

More may percolate up to the surface, and I'll be back.

I'll look forward to your post, Mauro.

Thanks for chiming in, Tex. Sometimes it gets awfully lonely around here.

          Anyone else out there ?

For me, the one movie that comes to mind is American Beauty. The way Kevin Spacey handled all the crap going on around him was inspirational. If there was one character I could emulate from any movie it would be him, except for the getting shot part of course.

That was a great movie :T I remember I went to see that with my brother and a couple friends. Right when he got shot, the camera and/or film crapped out :E :M Man was that audience PISSED!! People were yelling, banging on the projector window etc  They got it running again a few minutes later but man that threw a wrench in the flow of the movie!

So many movies.... As a Kid probably Wizard of Oz had the biggest effect on me.

Teenager/Adult: Dune, American Beauty, Schindler's List, Shawshank Redemption, 12 Monkeys, Usual Suspects, It's a Wonderful Life, Vanilla Sky... all had a strong effect on me. I don't know, life affecting may be a bit strong though. Surely anything that makes you think, view something from a different persective or allows you to see/feel something for yourself makes it worthwhile IMO though

A couple more recent films that I've thought achieved those things include Finding Neverland and Garden State. Both excellent :T

aud19 - thats terrible. What a way to ruin one of the most dramatic parts of the movie. That only happened to me once at the theater. It was during the movie Krull and kept happening every 10 minutes. However in this case it was actually a good thing as that movie was pretty bad.

Gang, I've added spoiler tags to the relevant posts for the benefit of those that haven't seen the movie yet. Oh, don't look shocked - you know there are some people that haven't seen it yet.

The only reason I didnt put tags was Spacey's character basically tells you what happens at the begining of the movie. But now that I think of it he doesnt say how. Good looking out.

Well, movies that affected me......hmmm,first and most obvious for me since we were first visitors to Cape Cod and now are residents is Jaws. The movie was filmed on Martha's Vineyard,a twenty minute ferry ride from the cape.Well back when it first came out we would come down here and go to the beach....and truly be afraid to go in the water.Talk about a moving having an affect on someone.....

Schindler's list....my oldest daughter, who was in high school at the time and I went to see this movie. We sat there transfixed....and I found myself with tears rolling down my cheeks. No other movie has ever did that to me.And what also was amazing...you heard nothing in theater,no popcorn being eaten,no chatter, nothing but an occasional sob.Watching this fim was a truly moving experiance.

The ShawShank redemption....This movie of human suffering, endurance and ultimate overcoming had the greatest ending of anyfilm.Just the joy and celebration of Andy Dufrense and Red meeting up on the beach was enough to touch any heart.

Another movie I should mention is Aladdin. It affected me in the sense that before I saw it I thought "cartoon movies" were for kids and never gave them a chance. Since then "cartoon movies" have become some of my favorties. (I was in college when it came out on VHS).

                                Forrest Gump & Schindler's List.

Profoundly impactful. Life/Death and Hope. The impact a single person can have on the world and those around him. Knowing there is always someone worse off than you, and that you are never stuck in the ditch 100%. Realizing that people can change, and that I can do anything I want if I set my mind to it. I've watched both of these films atleast 50+ times, and they never get old. Masterpieces.

The only two films I've ever rated :5:...

The movie that changed my life in two ways the most was ( I know Ill get some giggles here) Star Wars, yeah I know, Im a geek. But it was not the actual film that changed me, It was the fact that I was 7 years old, and it was the last movie that my father and I seen together before he passed away. We seen that movie about 10 times at the old Glenwood Theatre in Overland Park, KS.That same experience is what started my fascination with audio and movie theatres.

What was really cool was that when Episode 1 came out, I got to take my daughter (who was 9 years old at the time) to the same theatre to see the movie on opening night.
Right after that movie left the theatres they closed the theatre and demolished it.

:agree: Of course, in the early nineties we only had VHS to settle with (it was all a 17 year old could afford; laserdisc was for the very few) and after seeing it 3 times at the cinema a friend of mine went to a "special shop" to copy an NTSC tape (which was released much earlier) to a PAL tape. Costs: about 80 guilders (40 dollars). The copy was of appalling quality with sound distortions etc... but it didn't keep us from watching it over and over. To this day, when I (occasionally) watch the dvd, I am still expecting to hear distortions at certain scenes and I am almost distracted from the movie by not experiencing any. :B

Soundgravy, the first thing that came to my mind when I read your post was "impressive" (an definitely no pun intended).

I find it difficult to really pick out films that altered my life. I think I tend to like movies that kind of acknowledge my way of thinking. It's like: this or that movie is saying something about me much better than I could have.. (simple example: I am a social worker and "Good Will Hunting" is portraying the difficulties (and satisfaction) of making contact with someone who is not easily reached)

But I'll try to mention (some) movies that have influenced me greatly (in one way or another):
Fight club (the struggling of male in modern society and on a personal level: me struggling with a broken relationship and being torn apart by very strong emotions on one hand, and on the other hand being held back by centuries of civilisation).

When I was young, movies had a different kind of impact on me.
Dirty Dancing: one of the many dance movies that influenced me to start dancing. Nowadays I am (more or less) a semi professional dancer.
As a child (1983) I have seen Robin Hood (with Errol Flynn). From that moment my friends and I went to the forest a lot and made countless wooden bows. I still like that movie and for me : Errol Flynn is the one and only Robin Hood. (Kevin Costner?? )
Bloodsport and the t.v. series "the master" got me into martial arts.
Top Gun made me want to be a pilot (a bow shooting, dancing and kicking f14 pilot with appalling math skills and visually impaired: minus 5 anyone? :B )

Of course there are much stronger movies (or certain scenes) out there (like the already mentioned Schindlers List or American Beauty. And I would like to add Saving Private Ryan and Memento). But I think the quality of those movies is that they affect almost everybody.

For sure I am forgetting many great movies, but when another movie comes to mind, I'll post it for sure.

I saw "2001: A Space Odyssey" in 1968 when I was 14 years old. The film made such a profound impact on me that I have seen it again at least a dozen times over the past 37 years. It is a challenging film for an adult to understand, let alone a 14 year old. After seeing it for the first time I discussed it endlessly with other people over the subsequent months, trying to obtain insights into what it all meant. The last time I saw it was about 4 or 5 months ago on satellite TV. I was amazed (again) at how little the film has aged. Even now I find some aspects bewildering and speculative. For example, the final scenes when Bowman is dying are still open to interpretation and the meaning is not entirely clear to me.

Just remembering the film while writing this post produces a tingle in my spine.

I would have to say Aladdin as well, but that's because while I was watching that movie I lost my virgi... just kidding. Couldn't help it.

The one movie that... not really changed my life, but really touched me was Black Hawk Down. There's been a lot of war movies, but that movie really showed what war's like now in days. I didn't see that movie until I got back from the Iraq, and it was really shocking to see the same things on tv. You know... a movie that REALLY portrays he way it goes down now.

                                        The end.

I saw Bonnie and Clyde at a drive in when I was like not more than 12 I guess since the movie was on at the theater in 67, so it probably took some time to get to the drive in, and the shere power of the ending of the story left such a strong impression on a kid. Yeah, even through a $3.00 tin can speaker. But the image was so big, ya know?

The movie that immediately comes to mind is "The DI", staring Jack Webb (Dragnet fame). Based on that movie I joined the Marines, and the rest is history.

I too saw 2001 in 1968. It remains for me, the ultimate film.

No other film has provoked so much awe and wonder in me. In fact, no other film has even come close.

The movie led me to read the entire "Odyssey" series by Arthur C. Clarke. That includes 2001, 2010, 2060 and 3001. As I finished the "Odyssey" series, I discoverd the "Rama" series of novels by Clarke. As novels, I enjoyed the "Rama" series even more than the "Odyssey" books.

The first in this series of 4 novels is "Rendezvous with Rama". Anyone who enjoys hard science fiction mixed with adventure will enjoy this series.

As a child a couple movies come to mind for various reasons.

Jaws had me scared of the ocean although growing up in KS this isnt a big concern, but the first time I saw the ocean it gave me pause.

Psycho (saw it on TV) made me take my showers with the bathroom door open for at least a year.

Star Wars gave me a new direction for my imagination to wonder. I think as a child we were already playing in space in our minds, but to see it on the big screen gave us new direction to pretend.

Excorsist to this day is tough to watch. I can handle a whacko but demon posession has always bothered me.

                                                        As an Adult:
Saving Private Ryan. I cried like a baby at the end of that movie. Now I am not one of these macho guys who hate crying, but as an adult I think I have actually cried 3 times, this movie was one of those occasions. Since this movie I have felt more passion for our service men and wemon.

Passion of the Christ. As a Christian I felt it was important to see this movie and we purchased it on release day, but I havent been able to watch it again. I plan on watching it, but it was so powerfull and dramatic it is a tough one. My wife and I litteraly didn't speak on the way home from the theater as we were trying to absorb what we had just watched. That is the only time in the 16 years that we haven't spoken to each other on a short ride like that even when angry with one another.
