Even better news is that the teaser will also debut online on the same day at Volkswagen's official website HERE, starting at 8:44pm ET and continuing for 48 hours. And, get ready to blow your load because it will premiere in Quicktime. Finally, a trailer that goes straight to Quicktime and doesn't makes us suffer through Flash or Real Player! Jackson's take on Kong will no doubt be something special, but I am still waiting to get my hands on the King Kong original on dvd, if it ever makes it there. I only have it on a stinky vhs tape.

Is this one going to be 3 1/2 hours long and broken into 3 seperate movies?

I am very curious to see what Jackson does with none LOTR material, he set the bar pretty high for himself.

Here's the news on Kong 1933 (Sounds like this year in the fall Oct/Nov timeframe):

The 1933 release sounds every bit as exciting as the Dec 2005 re-interpretation.

Hey folks, Harry here Ok - so Warners has finally gotten around to announcing that they've digitally restored the 1933 KING KONG to magnificent new starndards better than any modern audience has seen. But they're claiming to be doing a...

Hey folks, Harry here... Ok - so Warners has finally gotten around to announcing that they've digitally restored the 1933 KING KONG to magnificent new starndards better than any modern audience has seen. But they're claiming to be doing a theatrical release of these prints, undeniably capitalizing on the publicity bonanza surrounding Peter Jackson's new one. I've also heard Warners is planning an astonishing multiple dvd on the original KONG - but whether they release that in conjunction with theatrical or the dvd release of Peter's Kong - is unknown. And as for them revamping and restoring CINERAMA - Glorry be!

O.K., so this isn't a breaking story on a new film in development or a script review but I definitely count this as cool news to all of us film geeks out there.

H.P.'s website news reports the following:

Warner Bros. Studios and HP breathe new life into classic motion pictures

Warner Bros. Studios and HP also announced that they have teamed to restore the 1933 classic motion picture "King Kong." One of the American Film Institute's 100 most beloved films and named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, the original camera negative of "King Kong" has long been destroyed, leaving only elements and prints that have been deteriorating over the years.

Warner Bros. Studios has brought the best elements and prints from all over the world and has scanned them into a 4K digital file. Using HP's "dirt and scratch" technology, which was developed by HP Labs, the 72-year-old classic will be digitally restored to its 1933 brilliance. A new camera negative as well as new archival elements will be created so that the film will be saved for generations to come. This new, restored version of "King Kong," as it was originally released, will be screened theatrically and broadcast on television, as well as released on Warner Home Video.

HP has also invented a new film restoration process for Cinerama films that eliminates the "seams" visible from the old three panel Cinerama process as well as corrects the distortions in perspective that were inherent in the change from Cinerama's curved screen to a flat one. Tests have already begun on the classic MGM 1962 film "How The West Was Won," now part of the vast Warner Bros. Studios library.

                        Film geek extraordinaire,

                        Casual George
                        AND

According to Variety, by the time Universal releases Peter Jackson's vision of King Kong on Dec. 14, the first DVD edition of the original 1933 pic is expected to be on store shelves. Except it won't have a Universal logo on it.

Warner Bros. has long been working on restoring the pic for DVD release. Although it hasn't announced when the DVD will go on sale, it is expected to be near Jackson's "Kong."

In the runup to the release of its monster-mash Van Helsing last summer, U tried a similar gambit, releasing "Legacy Collection" editions of the classic Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Dracula pics that had inspired helmer Stephen Sommers.

So how did the classic Kong end up with Warners and Jackson's "Kong with U?

Rights to the 1933 film seem to have passed through nearly every studio's hands over the years.

The original Kong was produced by RKO Radio Pictures. But after RKO exited the studio biz in 1957 and sold its lot to Desilu, most of its library, including Kong, was bought by United Artists, which was in turn acquired by MGM.

Turner Broadcasting bought MGM's library in 1986, but 10 years later it merged with Time Warner, delivering rights to the original Kong to Warner Bros.

(In another twist, the 1976 remake of Kong was produced by Paramount, which had acquired the old RKO lot when it bought Desilu.)

Universal didn't have to license the character from Warners first because the Jackson pic is not, it says, a remake. And besides, the actual Kong character (though obviously not the original film) is now in the public domain.

Hollywood needs something to wake it up from its duldrums and, if anyone can, that be Jackson. If it's bad, I'm going to stand on top of my bookshelf speakers and jump...I really will I tell you.

Keith, if the bookshelfs are on the top of one of the Golden Gate Bridge's pylons, then I'd be worried. :

I think if anyone can make the definitive "big monkey" movie, it's Mr. Jackson. Uh, that'd be Peter NOT Michael.

I'm glad they kept in set in the 20's-30's. That'll keep any fighting between Kong and the military more balanced. I mean, can you imagine a 50-foot-tall ape even surviving an attack by an Apache helicopter using Hellfire missiles much less continuing to fight? Overall, the CGI looks okay with Kong being the only standout. But remember, they are still in post-production so who knows what improvements are to come. . . . :T

I like what I see there. It appears as though Jackson's version will be more faithful to the original and that can only be a good thing. CGI looked pretty good, too. I think this will be a winner.

ops: Here I posted it and then I plumb forgot to watch

KONG VERSUS THE T-REX on SKULL ISLAND!!!!!! Fan Boy Giddiness ensues. Should be like the JPIII version on the T-REX versus the Spinosauras I hope :yesnod: Hopefully a little longer in combat length.

Right now CGI looks good...not quite JP good but getting there. I love the overall look of the film.

Jack Black is going to stand out from what I've seen so far...good for him :T

December should be fun. Maybe there will be this new shift to a blockbuster summer and winter...I'd be cool with that trend continuing if the quality is good.

Thanks for the info on the oriinal Kong expected release dates. I'll be first in line on release day.
Kong had me from day one ever since I stayed up late one night and caught the 1933 orig on CBC. I tried to learn as much as I could on how they did that. It was really innovative back then for stop motion effects.
