That is all personal preference. I like spades myself because they don't compress and change shape over time like bananas do. You also have a large contact area with spades and can get them nice and snug. Everybody is different though.

Personally, I prefer banana plugs on the amp end of my speakers cables, and spades on the speaker end.
Banana plugs have plenty of contact area, and since amps are low to the ground, the chances are small that the weight of the speaker cable would yank out the plug. Plus, for heavy equipment in a stand full of gear, it can be really challenging to screw down spades on the amp's speaker terminals, particularly with a multichannel amp that is cramped on spacing of the terminals.
On the speaker end, spades don't stick out as much from the rear. Speaker terminals are usually easy to access and often spaced further apart than terminals on amps, making it simple to screw down the spades. Also, with speaker terminals that are angled down, banana plugs are more likely to slip out due to cable weight or an accidental tug on the cable.Comment

I like banana plugs better. I find no sound difference between the two if you have good ones. Its just that I find the banana plugs more convenient.Two Channel Room

I had spades on both the amp and speaker end of my all my speaker cables. I changed them to bananas at the amp end and they are much better. I am using the "straight wire" brand that have the screw tip that expands into the binding post and locks on with a vice grip, they are brilliant. The problem I had with spades wasn't so much with the RB1080 binding posts, but with my Aragon amp. But I changed them all to straight wire banana connections anyway, and I couldn't be happier. On the speaker end I still use spades, I never had an issue with them. The problem really only was with the Aragon amp binding posts, but as I said all my amp end connections are now banana.Comment

I'm a banana plug fan. I think they're banned in the EU because they fit power outlets which could be quite shocking, but they're very convenient for speaker hook-ups.- Mike

Hi, I read somewhere that spades are the preferred method of connecting speaker cables to the amp because banana plugs causes too much of a voltage drop (or something like that). Can someone please explain why one or the other is preferred? -
