I currently have my PC connected to my amp (Rotel RSX-1055) via an SPDIF connection to the Coaxial 1 input. I am using a Creative X-fi ExtremeMusic card and I am running windows XP x64 professional. Everything including drivers has been updated to the most recent versions. I have a stereo setup at the moment (but will upgrade to surround in the not-so-distant future) with a subwoofer attached to the front speakers (so not via the LFE port; this is what he guy at the hifi store recommended). I have no problems getting uncompressed/un-encoded sound through the APDIF connection, my music (and audio tracks of videos) plays fine.
I play my DVDs (mostly concert footage) on this computer using Windows Media Player 11 with ffdshow for audio and video rendering. When I select passthrough in ffdshow audio options for both DTS and AC3 I can get DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 working without any problems but my amp 'crashes' (Dolby Digital and and ProLogic II logos light up on the amp but then the LCD on the amp 'hangs' and I get no sound) when I try to passthrough Dolby Digital 2.0 (stereo). If I uncheck AC3 the PC will obviously not pass any Dolby Digital through in its encoded from (but instead spits out PCM). I tried this both on Windows Media Player 11 and Media Player Classic Home Cinema.
Does anyone here have any clue as to why Dobly Digital stereo won't go directly to the amp over the SPDIF connection while Dolby Digital 5.1 works flawlessly?
