    Picked up my 1058 today

I will try to post some initial impressions later this evening when I get it hooked up. I have to stare it while I get back to work for a few hours

      Nash,

Congrats, I bet a lot of users will be interested in what you think!!

I see you're in Plano. I'll be in Carrollton visiting my brother and sister over Thanksgiving, I'll stop by and we can watch/listen to the new 1058, it should be broke in by then. I'll bring my 1057 and we can compare them... What do ya think? :W

Seriously, have fun and let everyone know what you think, these have been highly anticipated!

I barely got any time to try the 1058 out tonight unfortunately. However, I can report that it took HDMI audio from my HD DVD and Blu Ray players as multichannel (this was reported by Rotel to work in another thread, but no one had really tested it yet). I can now listen to uncompressed and True HD tracks without using analog cables.

It does 1080p switching just fine for me - I hooked my HD Tivo, HD DVD and Blu Ray into it. I really haven't had much time to do anything else, so I'll get into some more testing tomorrow. The only thing I've noticed that's a bit annoying is there's a small "crackle" sound each time the HDMI audio resyncs (at least on my BD player). In other words, every time the audio drops out and comes back, such as when you hit chapter skip or go from a preview to another preview to the menu, I get a small crackle sound.

I am not using the 1058 as an amp, only a preamp - I am using a 1075 amp.

If anyone has specific questions on things I can test for you, let me know.

          Some important questions :

Does bass management, cinema EQ, Dolby PLIIx or Rotel surround back decoding (important for people with 7.1 systems) work on the HDMI input for PCM decoded True HD or Dolby Digital+, high rez PCM from HD DVD and Bluray?

All of the above are crucial features of any receiver to be used with the next generation video formats.

I´ll like a deeper review on the video scaler. I watch a lot of SD channels and would like to know if the scaler really makes a big difference in picture quality.

            Thank you

Awesome! Would love to hear some more feedback from you whenever you get the chance. My dealer (Stereo Exchange in NYC) also has them in stock.

Were you using a 1068 or 1098 prior to this with your 1075?

If so is there any noticable improvement, or noticable loss using this reciever as a processor?

Are you sure what you are actually hearing is uncompressed and the signal is not being downconverted in anyway when listening to PCM from HD DVD / BD?

I am not sure how I would check that, Vancouver. Other than perceived fidelity. I have not even had a chance to turn the unit on today yet, so I will answer the other questions as soon as I get a chance to spend a few hours with it.

I was using a 1066 as my preamp before this. I will try to compare some HD DVD TrueHD tracks since I listened to those on the 1066 before using analog.

Since there is such a difference between TruHD and DD I will beliec eyour ears.

What about DVD A or SACD via HDMI PCM? That would be an easy test also.

I just messed around with it for about 30-45 minutes. I will have to listen with a more critical ear, but it sure seemed that True HD on HD DVD and Uncompressed PCM on Blu Ray sounded better than their DD/DD+ counterparts. The HD DVD's sounded basically the same as when I was using True HD through the analog outputs to the 1066. I will experiment more over the next couple days, as I spent most of my time tonight with the Blu Ray.

I have an older Denon 2910 in my bedroom... can I use that to test DVDA/SACD over HDMI? I will have to borrow a DVDA disc from a friend as I dont have any DVDA/SACD discs.

I can't apply any of the DSP/EQ stuff when listening to HDMI PCM audio from Blu Ray/HD DVD. In other words, the PLIIx and DSP buttons do nothing.

As far as bass managment, what would be a good way to test it? Keep in mind I do not have a sub as I use Def Tech powered loudspeakers (with built-in amplified subs) for all 5 speakers. I just set all 5 to large and sub to No in the 1058.

One nice thing about this 1058 is that I have done away with 12 interconnects (6 channel analog audio from the HD DVD and Blu Ray players), a coax digital audio cable and 2 optical ones. My rack is starting to look much cleaner behind

Thanks for the info. I am surprised at the lack of features given the retail price of the unit.

this is a shame...so now way to do 7.1 from a hi rez 5.1 PCM.

Yes it is. I can overlook the True HD and DD+ or DTS MA decoding (even if others are already doing it) but no PCM processing of any sort I can not. First the RVE-1060 scaler being only 1080i and now the 1058 receiver with crippled PCM support but a significantly higher price tag? Rotel is far far far far far behind with the times.

There are a handfull of companies doing Dolby True HD and dtsHD Master Audio. Denon, Pioneer Elite, Onkyo, Yahama just to name a few. Since the decoding of those formats will happen in the Blu-ray and HD-DVD players and sent out PCM I don't think it's a big deal. As long as a receiver or preamp will decode multi-channel 96/24 PCM from the HDMI inputs that is all you need.

I was going to get this, but since 7.1 is something I wish to have from the hirez formats I guess ill wait to see if the new SSP from Rotel will process PCM.

                                      a real shame.

The last test report I read showed that (for example the Onkyo) did indeed receive the HD audio signal, but it then converted it to PCM and it was handled (Processed) as a regular 5.1 Dolby signal would be...

                                        so are you positive..?

because I kinda think there might be a lot of confusion on this topic, as far as who's units are actually doing what..? (regardless of what they say they do on the box) what are they actually doing, is my question...

The bass management and speaker distances would be set in the player, correct? The Rotel would probably just need to boost the sub a bit.

It is a shame that they did not allow for PLIIx decoding of the digital PCM signal though this does not really affect me as I have a 5.1 system and have no future plans up adding surround back speakers. Could something like this be added in a firmware update?

PCM processing is a must. How else to correct for brightness or inadequate bass management and or time delay? No one wants to be at the mercy of the player. I use Cinema Eq A LOT on my RSX-1056 and some HD-DVDs and Blu-rays are still in need of this feature.

My only options are to wait for the future RSX-1059 or be happy that I am getting Dolby Digital at 640 kbps instead of 480 (DVD) and 340 (movie theater), and DTS at 1.5 Mbps instead of 768 (DVD) and 1.2 Mbps (movie theater). Marantz is looking very tempting right now.

I must admit the 1.5 Mbps audio sounds very very good out of the Toshiba.

I have a Toshiba HD XA1 hooked via 5.1 analog to my Rotel RSX 1057 and the sound is amazing on the DD+ and TrueHD tracks.

Is this receiver HDMI 1.3 compatible? I am wondering if it can support bitstream audio of the new codecs.

No, it will not decode the new formats, but will accept the player decoded signal PCM over HDMI.

I played with sending 480, 480p and 720p from my HD Tivo to the 1058. In all cases, it was upscaling to 1080p and sending it to my TV.

As far as I could tell, there was virtually no difference between input modes - this means that the 1058 does a good job of upscaling to 1080p, matching the quality of a 1080i input. On the few HD channels I tested, it also seemed that the upscaler did approximately the same job of upconverting that the Tivo's scaler did. I have not tried upscaling component/svideo/composite, so I can't say how well it does on analog. But my initial impressions were that the upscaling via HDMI was good enough.

It's really hard for me to say whether the scaler "makes a difference" - in other words compare a 480i input to my TV with a 1080p input from the 1058. In the first case, my TV will simply scale internally to 1080p since the TV is a 1080p native DLP. So all I would be comparing would be the 1058's scaler with the TV's scaler.

                                                      Hope this helps somewhat

From what I understand there is NONE for high rez PCM (decoded True HD or PCM from Blu-ray, HD DVD or DVD-Audio and SACD) only for legacy formats like DD, DD-EX and DTS.

                                                                Yes I have one!

I got my 1058 a few weeks ago, I have to say this is my first Rotel. So far it has been a mixed bag for me for one I must say the musical qualities are terrific and there are no disappointments there so far. I also bought the 2 channel 50 watt amp for my front channels and am very happy with that as well they power my NHT V-2's rather nicely!
So as you can tell from my tone I’m a bit disappointed in something and that is the switching when using HDMI I first started with my DTV HR-20 DVR and when switching channels every few channels I would get a blank gray static screen and no sound. It also happens when I delete from the recorded material and revert to the guide. It's easily fixed each time by switching inputs and back to my SAT input. I tried plugging the HR-20 direct to the TV no problem ever. I then got a Samsung 12oo Blu Ray and same problem when switching to a live signal gray static screen I then switch inputs and I good to go. I can’t live with this much longer anyone have any ideas before I take this back to the dealer? Oh I tried three different cable AR HDMI 3 and a monster 600 and 1000 no luck with any of them. Thanks in advance.

Hello - I am wondering if anyone has experienced the following issue with the 1058.....

After growing tired downconverting to 480p for DVD viewing over analog signal, I decided to run a new HDMI line last night to my projector and replace all component cables with HDMI.

Everything seems to work okay except for viewing content from the Samsung DTBH260F HD Tuner through the 1058. The picture shows (colors are accurate) just fine except for a few lines that seem to scroll down the screen - some channels more noticeable than others. If I run HDMI directly from the Samsung to the projector, the problem goes away which tells me something is not right with the handshake between the tuner and the receiver. I am not certain what the exact issue is (HDMI mismatch?) and am not certain what the next troubleshooting step is and whether it be the Rotel or the HD Tuner.

Just to confirm what I am running:

                                                                      Comcast cable modem>Samsung DTBH260F HD Tuner>720P via HDMI>RSX 1058>720P via HDMI>Panasonic AX100U.

Also sounds like your using different HDMI cables when running the test you need to try same hdmi to rule out a bad cable even if it's new.

I run everything through a Furman Elite protector - I don't remember if I ran the coax through that as well, but will double check when I get home; however, if it is working just fine when I go staright from the HD Tuner, do you still think it could be a grounding issue? Weird thing is I though digital was immune to this kind of interference.

Digital is not immune. The rolling lines sound exactly like a ground loop problem, most likely from the cable signal. Ground loops are pretty crazy things to track down. Adding the 1058 to the mix (is addition to everything connected to it) could easily cause the ground loop.

If the tuner has a guide, pull it up and then unplug cable from the back of it. If the lines go way, you need to get a CATV ground loop isolator.

                                                                                    Hello -

We were out of town for a few weeks on holiday and I never had a chance to troubleshoot this before leaving.

I re-patched my coax lines to run through the Furman power filter, hooked up the ground loop isolator to the line and the problem persisted. I tried connecting the isolator on the line right before it is plugged into the HD tuner the and the line going into the furman and it made no difference - I also bypassed the furman and the problem persists.

Also, I disconnected the line coming from comcast and just tried hooking only my OTA run and that didn't make a difference.

Perhaps I have a bigger issue as I am having a few other issues since hooking up the HDMI to the 1058 - since I first posted this, I hooked up the turntable to the 1058 for the first time and have a very minor hum that was not present with my 1056. It is not noticeable unless the volume is turned high. I am running the turntable through the Rotel Pre-Amp. Also, since re-mounting the projector after running the HDMI, it seems to lose power initially after booting up.

I don't know if this is all the same issue, but I am thinking I need to start by taking the projector down and checking the power outlet at the projector and work backwards to the amp. Perhaps something was knocked loose.

If any other ideas, I would be appreciatative.

                                                                                    Thanks,
