The RB-981 is a very good amplifier, but most seem to think that the RB-991 and RB-1080 are sonically a little better and have more punch (200W vs. 120W). For the price you've mentioned however the 981 would be an excellent value. I'd go for it. Rotel amps are easily sellable on the net if you weren't 100% satisified.

      Hi,

I own both the 981 and the 985MKII. I can tell you it is a sweet combo. I have tried a bridged combo, but my monitor speakers don't need that. Actually it did not sound any different to me.

So get the 981, it is good value. The 2 x 130 watts it more than you probably need.

ps. It is worth changing the powercabel. Someting like VdHul or Supra's Lorad.

If I had my choice of 200 watts bridged, or 125 not bridged, I'd go not bridged. Bridging is fine for subs, things like that to generate more power, but for higher quality audio, not bridged is better. Bridging also pushes your equipment to run hotter in addition to likely an increased signal to noise response.

Thanks for the input. i bought 2 of them one for each channel and both to use bi amped to my center. wow what a bargain the sound is so much more 3 dimensional.

one question is they seem to hum a bit, is this a fault or nmormal usage, my 985 mkII doesnt make a whisper.

i have now spent far to much time sat in front of the TV watching film and listening to music.

What's a good price for an RB981 used. Is it 130w per side or total. I'm thinking of offering no more than $400 CDN.

              Thanks,

              Hey all-

Just a quick question before I send the unit off for service, wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

On power-down, the left channel of my RB981 produces a mid to high pitched "whine" or "squeal" about 5 seconds after the protection...
