    percieved SPL levels

is it just me, or does 70dB sound alot louder (when setting up a system) in pink noise through a regular speaker than it does through a sub?

i just got a new spl meter to verify, but to me anyways, 70 db through the test tone (sub) does not seem loud and through my reqular speakres it is loud.

maybe the higher frequencies are more anoying?> i think hearing loss occurs at higher frequencies, so this is not Led Zeppelin's fault!

You are doing just fine, as long as your sub gives out a 70db SPL to match your other speakers, there should not be any need to worry about which is louder. The higher frequencies always seem louder, whereas the low freequency output of your sub does not seem as loud....A sub should be felt rather than heard as they say...

Hearing sensitivity drops off rapidly as frequency drops toward 30-20hz ... approaches the physical/mechanical limits of the human ear as far as I can understand while I believe it is capable of hearing 20hz-20khz... not surprisingly thats the freq range of CD players ... although this is the range the sensitivity to the sub region is much lower. Also most animals (except an elephant can hear well i excess of 20kz - a Bat has a top end of up to 120khz...

Human dynamic range of hearing is 120db.

        SPL (Sound Pressure Level)

SPL stands for sound pressure level, and it is a measure of the sound intensity or loudness at a specific location relative to a reference level. It is commonly used to quantify and describe the loudness of sound in various audio applications, including loudspeaker design, room acoustics, and sound engineering. Sound pressure level is expressed in decibels (dB) and is calculated using the following formula:

        SPL (in dB) = 20 * log10(P / Pref)

Port diameter trade-offs: midrange SPL leakage
        by MarcE
        Hi everyone!

I have been playing around with Unibox and have a few questions about some port length trade-offs. First, I have actually heard this driver in the 3" port configuration, and there was not any problems with the port configuration, i.e. no port chuffing or obvious midrange...

Does anyone know why AVIA states 85 spl for mains but, 70 spl for the sub?
        by John Holmes
I finally decided to ask this question. I cannot figure out why it says to calibrate the sub to 70db when I know it should be the same calibration as the mains.

        Does anyone know?

        Watch out for hearing loss!
        by joecarrow
I just got back from a free hearing screening, and they confirmed what my girlfriend has been telling me. My hearing is less than great!

The way the audiologist explained it, 0db is taken as the average of what healthy ears should hear. Based on today's tests, my hearing is 10db below...

SPL vs HZ vs My Hearing
        by Eric_C
I've asked this question before but never got a clear answer.

Am I safe to assume that a very "boring" 85db is a safe listening level. I don't mind easy listening stuff that low but I do like to turn it up once in a while.

What makes me wonder is how does hz...
