Buy used Rotel RSP-1066 for Music?

undefinedundefinedI am looking to upgrade my processing at home. I own a AC-3 RSP-970 by Rotel and have enjoyed it for years. I have a Toshiba DVD the decodes DD/DTS. I purchased many years ago at the beginning of DD home theatre.

I am going to spend less that $1000.00 but would love to own another Rotel Product. I have owned so much of their equipment over the years that I do not want anything else.

My next problem is that I listen to a lot of music. I have a dedicated system for listening that is great but more and more I am in my HT room (small) and listen to Vinyl, CD's, FM and many DVD Audio and DTS 5.1 music.

So my problem is I need the dedicated Pre/Processing Rotel product that will let me listen to (2) channel stereo and enjoy the music. I have enjoyed the RSP 970 and bought it because I thought it sounded as good as as a pre/processor could back then 8 years ago.

I hear that the RSP-1066 is a good preamp? Remember I listen to music alot and have many preamps in my day with my favorites being the old Dynaco PAS tube preamps and the Superphon equipment by Stan Warren.

I understand that the 1066 has some problems which might degrade the bottom end of listening to other sources and may have a problem sending the lower end to the sub woofer???
These are issues that I can not afford to spend money on to find that there are issues.

My question to music lovers/HT owners is:
Would the Rotel fit my bill, would software updates by Rotel cover all the problems if I were to buy a used 1066 that was one of the first issues or how am I to know what model 1066 the issues have been taken care of:
Is there a new model out there by Rotel that would be a better buy than the 1066?
I also watch/listen to TV movies and hear that the Dolby Prologic II sounds much better than regulat Dolby Prologic? any comments on that.

I would be very gratified if a member or 2 or 3 could get back with me and help me out. I will be able to purchase in the next 2-3 months and want to make the correct move. It is my hope that I could purchase something by Rotel and updgrade through software and listen for years.

I am probably like the rest of you out there reading this, I have chased the upgrading bug for years. I am old and know what I like, my system right now is extemely dynamic and listeners are amazed and I am happy, but I would like to upgrade my processor and still have that detail/dynamics that a StAND ALONE PREAMP can give me.
thanks and hope to hear from many of you!

    Hi,

I thought I would resurect this thread (and rename it) since you had no answer. I have highlighted your questions in Purple text in case they got missed!

    My NET views:
    • RSP-1066 is a great second hand processor - you should be able to get one for US $ 600 or so.
    • For music the new RSP-1068 is noticably better - especially it's analog bypass mode. If you keep hunting you may get one second hand for close to your $1,000 price range - I would try really hard !!!
    • Yes Dolby Pro-Logic II is WAY WAY better than Dolby ProLogic (and IIx is better again) For example Prologic II has stereo full range rear speakers, compared to the mono limited range ones of Prologic.

I 2nd the 1068, if you can get one for your'e budget or add a few dollars to it it will be money well spent. I, as you started with a similar pre/pre (RSP-980). Moved up to the RSX-1055 wich gained in the surround modes but gave up some in the 2 channel only area, and just recently settled in on the RSP-1068. I suspect I will be content with it for some time to come. It is the best of both as far as surround and 2 channel.

What are your top five (or 10) must have, well recorded favorite albums?
