    RCD 1070 question/problem

Has anyone else experienced this w/ the RCD 1070/1072? :

Every now and then, I'll stick a disc into my 1070 and immediately hit play and when I do that, the CD will start at track 10, instead of 1. This does not happen all the time and it never happens if I give the machine time to read all the tracks first and then hit play. Any ideas on what might be causing it to start up at 10? I've done this with other CD players and never had it start on any other track but 1. Perhaps it is just a quirk of the player and I should just have some patience...

    Nope,

If I push play on my RCD 1070 too soon, nothing happens at all and I have to go back and push play again. Track 10? I guess nothing happening is better than that.

      My 1072 doesn't do this.

My only complaint is when using my Harmony universal remote. I can select tracks by pushing the numbers on the remote from 1 - 9, and it will take me to the track I selected. However, for some odd reason, if I enter "13" (to select the 13th track), it will take me back to 1. It's like it can only read single digits so it uses the first one keyed in. Weird, but something I can live with.

I thought it was just me.

I'll drop Rotel a line about it. It's not a big deal, but something maybe they are not aware of.

          Thanks Mitchell!

            Rotel 1070 Problems

I've had problems with my Rotel 1070 reading certain CD's. It reads most CD's find, but I've noticed it has problems reading certain CD's. I recently purchased the Diana Kroll "Live in paris" and it can't read the first two tracks. I put it in any other CD player, no problem. Also, had a problem on a relaxing with the classics CD and on a burned CD-R. I've had the player for about 3 years, but it was in storage most of the time. It's fine with most CD's and even sounds great, but does anyone have an idea what might be wrong. I've never tried cleaning it, do you have to do that after some time? Or could it be a chip malfunction that it's not able to read certain CD's? Sometimes it can't even load up the tracks on the CD, other times it does but then can only play certain tracks.

How much would a repair cost on this unit? It is worth it? I've been playing all the problem CD's in my Pioneer Elite DV-C36, which does an excellent job on CD's. I have it matched with a Rotel 1065 so it can't be some strange incompatibility.

            Please help??? 8O

I own the RCD-1070, and I found that when I burn CD's that certain brand names have problems playing through the 1070. I have also found that Imation CD-Rs, provide the least problems with playing MP3s.

There could also be a laser alignment issue with your CD player.

I would talk to Rotel tech support to see if there is anything they can do, before throwing in the towel.

              Just my quick thoughts,

Do you think it's worth fixing, because it still sounds excellent on any CD it is capable of reading which is still 95% of my recordings. I hate to send it to Rotel just to find out that it's an inherent problem. It seems to have occasional problems on lower tracks for some reason. Although, sometimes it just wouln't recognize a cd. Has anyone else had problems with the RCD-1070.

As a side note. I'm a little annoyed at Rotel, my warranty ran out just a few months ago and they refuse to honor it. If this is a known problem they might be more willing to fix it honoring the warranty. I even purchased it at an authorized dealer along with the RSX-1065. The 1065 also had to be sent back for a known problem with the display, they installed a switch in the back to illuminate the display occasionally to reset the pixels. As much as I love the sound of my Rotel equipment, I'm thinking my next purchase will probably be Arcam or something along those lines.

Have others had to repair almost every Rotel item you've owned? I have a Pioneer Elite progressive scan DVD Player (DV-C36), which has outstanding quality - not a single problem.

                  Hi astravitz,

If your player has problems reading lower tracks on CDs, it is possibly a laser tracking issue. A CD is written inside to out, so the earliest tracks are stored closest to the centre. Towards the centre of CDs, the track's circumference is smaller, and the motors that keep the laser positioned over the track have to work harder. If your motor is faulty, the earliest tracks on a CD are where you are most likely to have problems.

You should talk to your dealer - even out of warantee, this is not a hard or overly expensive problem to fix. However, it is strange that you would experience this problem on a player that is only 3 years old... especially one that hasn't been used often. Does your player skip, or simply refuse to play the earlier tracks (skipping is a major symptom of the problem I have described).

                  Hope this helps, Ben

Hello all. I'm new to the board. I stumbled on this while trying to troubleshoot my 1070 preamp which has decided to stop working. I am the owner of a 3 piece set of Rotel 1070 series components which are just under 3 years old. In this time, I have sent back 2 cd players. I'm on number 3 right now. Now, my preamp is on the fritz; I can't get it to turn on.
I also own some very cheap Sony gear. Not one item has ever needed repair ever in 15 years. So it appears that, yeah, others are having the same problems.

Hi I am new to the forum. I had purchase a 1070 in the use market. The player has a solid built like my MF E60 but definitely sound much better.

As for your problem, it should be the transport problem.:

                      - lens is dirty; or
                      - gears need lubribation; or
                      - defective lens.

Since it is a tracking issue, I think it is more of a defective lens.

When my 1070 wouldn't play certain cds and/or certain tracks, I sent it to the factory. I was told that it was a laser misalignment in the player.

                          Problems with Rotel CD Players

I contacted Rotel via email. Called Rotel and spoke with someone at Equity Audio and they said they would provide an RMA number for the repair. I never heard back from the guy. This is unbelieveable that apparently a large number of people have gotten the "laser tracking" B.S. too. It seems to be more of a design issue or a manufacture defect.

A few years ago, Hewlett Packard was forced to fix all of thier Laserjet 6L printers because it was determined that their was a defect in thier design (multifeed problem). I recall that Intel had to recal thier original pentium chips for a divide by zero error.

So, I'm requesting that anyone that has experienced problems with a rotel CD player being unable to read a disk, post to this site thier problem description. If enough people complain, perhaps they will do a voluntary recall fix for the issue, rather then have to deal with a class action suit that would cost a lot more.

Rotel is small compared to the HP's and Intel's of the world, but that's no excuse for putting out more expensive product that can't perform over time.

I would not consider this small group as being a large number of people. There are like 8 people that have posted that have had isolated issues. With the thousands and thousands of the CD players that Rotel has sold this seems to be a very small number and an isolated issue. I am willing to bet that if you contacted them then they have tried to get back to you in one way or another. Those guys seem to be pretty good over there and have a good reputation for customer service. If they have not gotten to your problem yet then I am willing to bet that there are some other circumstances that you do not know about. Other than that, yes, the player is worth fixing since it is a great sounding CD player.

                            G.

I called and spoke to a supervisor "Paul", who was extremely helpful. He took my information, and called me back 10 minutes later with a RMA #. He said that they would even honor the warranty. I'm now a happy camper, but concerned about the other people that have similiar problems. Pressing play and not being able to "play" a cd in a $700 player is not a good thing. I'll let you know if they are able to fix the problem and what it ended up being.

                                skipping to track 10

It looks like the tracking problem that other owners are having is a lot more serious than what I described in my first post. My 1070 still skips to track 10 from time to time ONLY when I stick a new disc in and it reads it. I'm going to troubleshoot a bit more and see what happens when I hit play from the remote, instead of the front panel control. I've never had a problem w/ my 1070 reading discs. In fact, it reads some discs that my car stereo & other cd players will not.

I would strongly suggest you bring your player into the shop now if it's still under warranty. The problems with mine started few and far between but it snowballed into a situation where the player was not operable. I'm really not trying to bag on Rotel here, but the one other person I know with their gear (who isn't on this board) has had the SAME problems.

I forgot to post a follow up. Rotel fixed my RCD-1070 and set it back in about a week. They didn't charge me a penny and even sent it back in a better box then I shipped the unit. I couldn't be happier and I'd have to say it sounds better then the day I purchased the unit. It can now read every single CD I through at it. When I was at my dealer recently and told him the story, they said it wouldn't surprise him if they might have upgraded the parts with stuff from the RCD-1072. He said, "It's just that type of company."

I would have to agree, although I was surprised to see that my recent addition of a RX-1052 had "MADE IN CHINA" stamped over it. I wonder if this might contribute to some of the quality issues?

Rotel Factory in China no cause for worry

I wouldn't be too concerned with the location of the factory. It is Rotel owned, which means that they have complete control over quality of their work. Since many of the components in the CD player are sourced from other manufacturers, it is just as likely that quality control problems from one of their suppliers is causing the problem in the finished Rotel product.

I have it hooked up to a 1072 and 1077. I have to admit I am surprised at how much better...
