    crossover frequency

I currently purchased a pair of Energy Veritas V2.4's I have the Rotel 1066/1075. I set the crossover frequency to 60hz....Do you feel that this setting is correct or should I go higher or lower? Also something was mentioned about the crossover being global for all speakers. Is this correct?
    Thanks,
    Shane

    TDL,

You will need to provide the frequency response of your speakers (and the subwoofer type and specs if applicable).

Most individuals set the crossover to 80, I have set my crossover on the Rotel pre/pro to 100 and the crossover on the sub to 65 with all speakers set to small, however I am running a Sunfire Subwoofer Mark IV and it doesn't handle frequencies above 65 very well. It's usually is a matter of personal taste, room acoustics, etc.

Have you calibrated your speaker (and subwoofer if applicable) decible levels using a SPL meter? This is one of the most critical elements in the speaker configuration.

    Hope this helps,

    Azeke

      Very nice speakers.

They're rated at 30-20,000 Hz +/- 3 decibels. So, you could use the 60 Hz crossover setting comfortably. I'd do what Azeke said and try it out at both 60 and 80 on both music and HT and find out which one suits your taste more. But, setting the crossover at 60 Hz is fine with your speakers.

I have the Paradigm 2200 subwoofer. The specs on the speakers were posted. The Paradigm also does not do well with sounds much above 60Hz, or at least that is my opinon. I have calibrated the system with the Radio Shack Analog SPL meter prior to having the Energy speakers. What a difference that made!! It was my first time using one and I do not think I got it right for about 2 days, but it was well worth all of my efforts. I will be picking up my center channel on Monday so I will wait until then to re-calibrate the entire set-up. Thanks for the information. Does anyone know if the crossover setting is a global setting for all the speakers? Or is it just mains to sub?

If you have a good subwoofer, set it your speakers to small. This will take the strain of the speakers to produce the low frequencies and let the subwoofer take care of that.
Note that the crossover is not a hardbrick wall, so your speakers will extend somewhat below the crossover. With your speakers not having to handle the really low frequencies they should be able to play better in the regions that they still need to do.
Personally I like the speakers to be "small" in movies and large with music (where i don't use the subwoofer). Unfortunatly for the 1066 there is only one setting.
Just experiment with the settings that sound the best.

No it is not a global setting for all speakers as some speakers do not perform well at differant DB's. I like my 1066 set at 100, my Klipsch speakers will more than handle below that, but right now I like the sound the best overall with the 100 setting. The Rat shack meter is a good way to calibrate the system, your taste in sound also matters and if you like the 60, 80 or the 100 setting for you crossover then use it. Also I prefer to calibrate the sub and then turn it very hot....but thats just me. I have the fronts and center set to large... I tried both and suggest you try both to determine the best combo. Have fun and enjoy.

According to Dickason, the general rule of thumb (of course there are exceptions) for the lower crossover limit for midrange and tweeters is to be at least 2x the FS of the driver, 3-4x is even better.

He also suggests that the upper level crossover for woofers and midranges should be...
